Samsung Samsung NX image thread

Thanks for the reply Nic. I love the looks of the NX300 itself and one thing I'm curious about is subject isolation easier on the NX300 than the OMD with say the 45mm 1.8 or the 25 1.4? And how do working with the separate RAW files compare? Sorry if this should be posted elsewhere.

The larger sensor means that for an equal field-of-view the E-M5 would need to be opened up by one more stop to equalise depth-of-field, and comparing the 25mm f1.4 with the Samsung 30mm f2 it does have that ability, however I would say that I prefer the IQ of the 30mm at f/2 to the 25mm at f/1.4. I haven't really compared the two cameras back-to-back here so I couldn't definitely nominate one over the other. My feeling is that maybe I slightly prefer the NX300 and 30mm pancake. I don't have an equivalent Samsung lens to the Olympus 45mm f1.8 so I can't say much here either.

Re: the raw files. When I first got the NX300 I just used the same Lightroom preset from my NX200 and was struggling to get the NX300 files how I liked them. It turns out that even though the NX200 and NX300 share a similar sensor it has been significantly tweaked in the NX300 and I had to go into the preset and back off some of the settings like clarity, noise reduction, vibrance. The NX200 could be worked quite hard to get a pleasing result but doing the same thing to the NX300 made the files look unrealistic, and the modified preset now gives me results from the NX300 that I am very happy with. I think this is going to be the case with any camera that a better sensor simply requires less processing. Compared to the E-M5, the NX300 are a bit smoother and have a different colour signature. I think that the Samsung is less likely to oversaturate reds than the Olympus, and overall the colours are a little more subdued without looking dull at all.

Yea, I can't believe how cheap the 30mm is. I just wish you could buy the NX300 body only.

Yeah, I think that Samsung either is or has made a revised version with the iFunction button which would lower the price of existing stock (not that it was expensive anyway). The button could be useful if you like lens mounted controls but I have it on the 20mm pancake and don't use it so I don't miss it on the 30mm.
