I looked at the image processing topic first, but based on what's there this seemed a better fit. I do restorations (this being an extreme example) using mainly the clone feature in Paint Shop pro v6 (circa 1998). Although there is some detail replacement here, I try to avoid 'photoshop' effects and retain the original look with just the damages repaired or distracting clutter removed. If this topic works I'll try to add some less extreme examples. These house sparrows were photographed in 2004 with a Casio Exilim EX-Z1000, using the camera flash.
