Nikon Showcase Nikon Coolpix A Image Thread

Have been away from this thread for some time, nice to see it still has life. Nice shots Ray, was hoping you'd jump in on this thread again.

Here are some from Martha's Vineyard earlier in August this year.

This thread will never keep up with the GR thread, but gotta keep it going whenever possible...

I have two settings on this camera - one setup for street that lives on the U1 spot on the dial, the other for virtually everything else, that lives on the U2 spot. I keep thinking that sometime I'll find something that one of these setups won't handle, but I haven't found it yet. In the case of the street setting, the only thing I have to keep an eye on and change regularly is the exposure comp, with the occasional opening of the aperture if I move from outdoors in good light into low light, either indoors or evening. On the other setting, I'll change the aperture and the exposure comp a fair amount, but that's about it. The best little set and forget camera I've yet found.

These first couple were also seen in the "three amigos" thread:

Some questions please about the Coolpix A...

Went to my local camera shop today and have a Coolpix A on loan till Monday. Nikon sent out an email last week about loaner A's at local shops. Piece of cake. They had one ready and waiting.

Did a few quick test images at home, loaded up into Lightroom 4.4 and all I'm seeing are the adobe calibration/profile choice plus what looks like generic landscape, neutral, portrait, etc. Five total. Is this normal? Should I have more to choose from? I've got like twenty or more when I look at the nef's for my D700.

Also, on the back of the camera, the flashing question mark and flash symbol in low light, is there a way to stop that?

There's some color aberration stuff happening in the dark areas on some these first images; why I was looking for alternate profiles. Also, more noise/grain in images than i was expecting. But these first few are 800 and 1600. Noise in 800 iso images really not bad at all. 1600 gets kind of weird. But it's the first few hours with it, indoors. I'll have all weekend to play.

It does seem really solid. Well built. I quickly ran through the manual and it was pretty easy to set up. Pretty fast autofocus. And it's amazingly small and light. I can't believe there's an aps-c sensor in this thing.

Using LR5.2, I've got Adobe Standard plus eight Nikon specific profiles - Clear, Deep, Landscape, Light, Neutral, Portrait, Standard, and Vivid. I don't recall if those were all there with version 4.?? I had before. But that's all I'm getting with this version. Less than you're getting for your D700, but more than you're getting with the "A" with the earlier version of LR...

There is no way to kill the flashing question mark and flash symbols. When I first got the camera this was driving me crazy and I thought it might be a deal breaker. Within a couple of days I stopped noticing it and I'd completely forgotten about it until you just mentioned it. It seems un-necessary and intrusive, but fortunately I guess I have just exactly the right kind of brain damage to tune stuff like that out pretty easily.

As for noise/grain, I'm really happy with it. It doesn't compare to my RX1 (full frame) but is as good as any APS sensor based camera I've shot with. I shoot with it up to ISO 6400 and there's definitely noise, but it's a pretty tight pattern that looks more like grain and less like splotchy noise and I'm fine with it, particularly for B&W street shooting, which I do a lot with this camera.

I'm constantly amazed that this tiny little pocket camera can output the image quality that this does. It helps that 28mm is my "sweet spot" focal length. The "A" and the Ricoh GR have really ushered in a new day. I'm loving it and wonder what's gonna come next...

thanks for all this info, Ray...

I don't have all that, clear, deep, light as available profiles. I opened a file in acr 8.2 and it has the same profiles as lightroom 4.4...for the d700 i've got various D2x modes plus v1, v2, etc for each...and all the standard profiles have v1, v2 to v4 for each. I think many of these were done by Eric Chan at Adobe to help with the weird colors d700 profiles were creating at first...

the flashing lights stopped bothering me a couple hours into shooting this morning...we must be smoking the same stuff ;-)

I'll post a few photos when I can, when I'm half ways content with some...this morning I had a lot of out of focus shots,...me getting used to how this camera does autofocus...i've played with lots of the cameras adjustments, getting used to how it sees, how i want it to see...also played with the auto iso which is really nice...

I did follow your saga at dpr when you wrote on the GR vs. A and found it really helpful...

right now here in France I can buy the A for 650 euros and the GR for 700...i have seen the GR as low as 636 euros but it has gone up a bit in recent days...

I'll have to play with a GR too, but right now, based on a better grip, some additional functionality like the nd filter, the add on 21mm lens if desired, and how ricoh is known for improvements via fw I think i'm leaning toward a GR. I wasn't sure the 28mm focal length would feel right for me, I've used 35 and 50 mm lenses on my d700 for so long, but this morning I felt right at home with the A.

ok, more in a few, when I can post a few images...

kind regards...

-Morris

borrowed the nikon A for a few days last week...here a couple images as I get used to the forum...

most straight from camera except for standard adjustments to exposure, contrast, etc., no noise reduction and rarely any sharpening, just playing with color and conversions, see what it does...the only things that i wish for this camera, a bit faster auto focus and a tilting screen, otherwise, for me, it's great...really nice image quality, color is very good, it's almost invisible on the street which i really love, and it's small and light to have with me always...i may buy this down the road, i'm not sure, but it's well built and amazing to have this kind of image quality in a tiny camera...

A few more from my tests with the nikon A.

A few from the street...played a bit with color here. A preset I cooked up for color film in Lightroom. Added some grain as well.

After a few days of shooting with the A I did set up a preset in Lightroom 4 that brought in my images in a more neutral form. I found the Adobe profiles brought images in a bit too dark, contrasty, with a bit of color saturation I didn't like. So, my preset lightened everything up a bit so I could see what I've got. Then I adjusted exposure, contrast, etc. to taste.

Cropped pretty much. Left color as is from camera, well, except for what the profiles in Lightroom do to the image files.

This one is heavily cropped, a small sliver of the entire image file. Also desaturated color and added grain via Lightroom 4.

I've been pretty amazed by what this little camera can do. Dynamic range is really good. Noise levels good too. Sharpness, detail is just amazing. I played with sharpening some and most of the time it isn't necessary, not for web images at least. Ok, maybe a few more later.

this 'blur' is part of a series I've been working on using a dslr...wanted to see how well the A would handle the up/down movement, and any detail that's left...this example is more figurative than most for me, the large part of the series i'm working on is abstract...

besides being curious about this compact and how it handles small detail, it's great by the way, I was recently reading some thoughts by Howard Zinn on obedience when I passed this wall on the way to a yoga class...

transport...

I took lots of photos on the tramway. Perfect hard light and deep shadow to test a camera. The A worked really well, and hardly anyone noticed I was taking photos. Those that did see me hardly cared. Nice camera for a street shooter.

this first one is layered...I did basic crop and exposure stuff in Lightroom, then opened it in photoshop...made a b&w layer with silver efex 2 and combined as luminosity layer...it's a fav technique of mine...

one of my favorite themes, cafes and coffee...getting some of these is much easier with a swivel screen on the camera, but it's possible to see and compose at sharp angles with the lcd...it's a pretty good screen...

First of all, thanks to everyone here in the community for the information that has been created throughout the forum here. This is my first post here on SC, and the forum was invaluable to me in buying a new (and first serious compact or other) camera recently. I especially want to thank Ray for his well-balanced comments on this site on the Nikon A, and also tallahassee for his excellent examples. If it is allowed, I'll post a little bit of background about how I ended up with my Nikon A, in the hope that perhaps it can be interesting to others deciding between the GR and the A. It's perhaps more a personal review than showcasing my not-yet-trained skills, but hopefully still welcome. Before I bought the A, I had had a simple Pentax Optio S5i consumer for almost 9 years. My dad is a hobby photographer, and I decided I now had the inclination to for the first time experiment with his hobby for myself as well.

I started my search for a new camera with testing the Ricoh GR IV limited white edition for a week, comparing it to a friend's Powershot S110 at the same time. The ergonomics of the GR IV blew me away, it was like a revelation. Why did all this other crap exist, if a camera could be like *that*?? I was madly in love. But also, I was dissatisfied with the colors and brightness from both the GR IV and the S110 (although opposite directions). So I moved on to the Sony NEX-3N, already more pricy than what I wanted to spend. The menu and settings were an insult and the camera too heavy and big for my taste, but I liked the picture quality. After a short interlude with the Samsung EX2F, next considered were the Ricoh GR and the Coolpix A. Where I live, you have to spend roughly the same for both, for some reason. The A I could get used for a good price with a return period, but the GR only used without a trial period. So I compared literally hundreds of pictures between the two on review sites, here on SC, and on flickr. I thought I disliked the GR's more faded colors, and went for the A - and I never regretted it one second. Yes, it's not as ergonomic, I miss having the GR IV around (a friend bought my trial model, in the end), and there are plenty of design insults to curse all day about. But the color and image quality are just amazing to my (untrained) eye. I've not seen such colors from the GR anywhere online, and even from those that were heavily post-edited, which I don't do. Despite never having had photography as a hobby before, I do have a good idea of my use pattern already: always straight out of cam jpg (no time for editing combined with a sense of purity or simplicity). Easy to take along, because I don't have the time to go shooting in itself - it must be with me with my normal activities and ready when I see something that fascinates me. Good colors and IQ. No shoots that violate my sense of others' personality rights (so not much street "pornography"..). And with SOOC, I mean even no cropping or b/w conversion. In summary, I found that the A perfectly fits my needs. By now, I also tested the GR in store, and wouldn't trade.

But enough said, here are some results with comments:

The above three were some of the first I took, and after them, I was sold for the Nikon A. The reflections and sweat drops in the window of the first, and the colors in that dimly lit bathroom in the second and colors and detail in the third's cafe interior blew me away.

For the above, I never even stopped walking. I was visiting a friend, saw the scene, pulled out the A, turned it on, fired, and voila - it looked exactly how I saw it. That's what I like about the A: the pictures look _exactly_ how I saw the scene at the time. But while it's quick to turn on, there are some AF issues sometimes indeed... :

For the first above, I had tried to take a much nicer shot of the little orange cleaning wagon in a scenery.. But the AF never locked because it was driving at 3feet/s..!!! So I had to wait until the driver stopped for a chat. This was a bit disappointing, and in the second one, I also tried to quickly get the yoga girl, but somehow it ended up out of focus, at least I think it is, because usually it's sharper at that distance..

And one to close this post off, thanks for reading/viewing: :)

To revive an old thread. I shot today's St. Patrick's Day parade in Philly, all with the Nikon A. I've been doing some street work with my Fuji gear lately, and it works, but this little Nikon is definitely my go-to street camera. I had the Fuji and a couple of lenses in the bag today and they never came out. Could have travelled a lot lighter, not that I was carrying much as it was... It was a cold, blustery day - not cold by this winter's standard, but damn cold for a parade!

Some cool grainy B&W in that series - reminds me of when I was your age, hiking and hanging with friend in the rocks (in my case out west - not sure where these are...)...

How are you able to embed your whole photostream like that, rather than a pic at a time? Sort of cool to be able scroll through a bunch of shots right from this page and then only click through to see one or two in larger sizes...

-Ray

There was an option for me to try out the new "beta" flickr page and I selected ok. Each time I go to share an image now I can embed the flickr image or select html if I dont want the player.

These shots were taken recently in Southern CA. A big part of me choosing the Coolpix A was due to your feedback on it. It seemed as you liked it for all the reason I would and so far its great!

Sent from my SPH-L900 using SeriousCompacts mobile app

OK, let me try this... Oh, I see - it's the option that looks like this </> with the embed option chosen:

<iframe src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/20889767@N05/13204880323/in/set-72157643267130794/player/" width="1024" height="768" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

Don't know how much I'll use it. I may try it with a small set and see if it'll limit the scrolling to that set. This option seems to show your whole photo stream.

Edit just created a small set with these Nikon A shots from St. Patrick's Day in Philly - if you embed a photo selected from within a set, the "player" only plays that set - not the whole photostream. This seems like a really good way to share a specific groups of photos rather than taking up a bunch of space with 5-10 photos in line.... I'll try to use this going forward.

Anyway, glad you're liking the camera! Depending on what specific features you're using, you'd have likely been equally happy with the GR. But if you're as picky and specific in your shooting habits as I am, the A might be better. Either way, you got a great little camera...
