My latest blog post is a user-experience type review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5. The G6 is coming out and the very excellent G5 may be available for much less.

I did a short review here on the site, but the blog post pulls together a lot of my posts on the G5 including talking about the E-M5's "purple blob" problem. There's a lot of image samples sprinkled through it as usual, lol.

Great stuff as usual John! I've been away from M43 (except for video with the GH2) for a while. But I've recommended the G5 to friends and associates and they have been pleased. As your pictures show, the cameras are good enough, it's the photog that counts.

    Much obliged, John!

Looking forward very much to our group meetup next week, by the way.

It's funny... I have both the G5 and the LX7. Now, I have targetted the OM-D/E-M5. But I'm trying to wait for a good price on close-out, which I assume will happen once its replacement is announced (expected in September).

Some of my Panasonic and Olympus micro four-thirds gear appears to overlap and duplicate function. But, as you have discovered, Mr. Griggs, some cameras and lenses are better for some tasks than others. And some combinations work better than others in certain situations.

    Thanks, Steve!

Indeed all the tools are different in their own way which always makes me wince when people ask what the "best" micro four thirds camera is! Part of the reason I'm not a partisan is because I'm so self centered, lol -- I only care about what the camera can do to help me make my art.

you should be able to figure it out...
Nice write-up John, and GREAT photos, as usual. I've never really gotten comfortable with a Panasonic m43 body since the GF1, but I see lots of people doing such great work with them. Which just confirms for me how nice it is that we have choices!

Amen! If there was only one of ANYTHING that suited everyone, then there would only BE one of everything, lol!

    Thanks, Ray!

At this level, I don't think there is really anything left in the way of bad sensors, but thank goodness there is still some uniqueness left. The GH1/2 sensors going back to the first 12/14MP version offer something different of their own, although it is a shame that the very useful multi-aspect functionality is now disabled in the G5/6 iteration. My GH1 is currently wounded from when an SD card lock tab broke while inside it and damaged the release mechanism, but it still works with 8Gb of "internal memory" and I hope that it keeps going for a while longer yet.

Enjoyable read, John, and as usual stellar photos. Panasonic needs to develop a "John Griggs" button for their next camera, they'd sell a couple million of 'em.

You guys are way too nice to me! Thank you!

Well, early AM and I'm off on a 100 plus mile drive to an urbex site so expect pics later today (though only a few probably -- I'll be tired when I get back, lol). It'll be mainly the G5 and 7-14mm but also the E-M5 and the 25mm f/1.4. I'm taking other lenses but that's the plan so far.
