Panasonic LX5 audio problems with video

I shoot video on my LX5 very occasionally. Recently, I've been having problems with the audio sensitivity - basically, it's recording sound at too low a level. I'm getting a very loud background hiss with very faint audio on playback.

I've tried a few thing while trying to fix the problem :
- my finger isn't blocking the microphone
- I've played with the "wind cut" and "conversion" settings
- the microphone slots look clear of debris
- the zoom lever controls audio playback level correctly
- I've searched the manual (RTFM'd it...................)

Is there any control over the recording level or is it a defect?
