A solo hike this afternoon, despite mostly cloudy skies. Had not been on this trail in several months, and was once again amazed by the tall trees, rock formations, arroyos, and a few wildflowers.
But about 15 minutes inbound to the parking area, a huge thunderstorm, with heavy hail, caught me unawares. Fortunately I found a bit of shelter under a huge Ponderosa Pine, and managed to don my raingear before getting soaked.
It was quite something to watch the windblown sheets of hail and rain, and my head smarted from some of the impacts. It lasted about 20 minutes, and by that time the ground was completely covered with white stuff, and the trail and arroyos were rushing rivers.
It was an exhilarating adventure, though, and made for a good story.
