Gimp 2.10

With Gimp 2.10 now beginning to appear in repositories for Linux distributions I have just updated from Gimp 2.8 to 2.10. Given that the version number has only increased from 2.8 to 2.10 you might expect a small change to have taken place. Nothing could be further from the truth, the whole face and working of Gimp has taken a dramatic step forward with this new version. As a user of RawTherapee I have been pleased to see that RawTherapee can now act as a plug-in in Gimp in much the same way that Adobe Camera Raw acts in Photoshop, open a raw image with Gimp and it automatically opens in RawTherapee before being sent to Gimp for any final processing. The release notes for Gimp 2.10 can be found at the following address and make very interesting reading GIMP - GIMP 2.10 Release Notes

Open source photo processing software has just taken a very interesting leap forwards.

Interesting! I used to have gimp and RT as my main image development tools, until I bought LR... But the subscription model really put me off, and I've been looking for a replacement ever since. If it can be free, that'd be awesome.

Another interesting article, although now over 4 years old, detailing the experience of switching from Photoshop to Gimp. Riley Brandt Photography » Switch from Photoshop to GIMP: Tips From A Pro
The script he mentions that replicates Photoshop keyboard shortcuts for Gimp, ps-menurc needed to be put into /etc/gimp/2.0 after I'd updated rather than where it resided in Gimp 2.8.
The tools mentioned later in that post from Thorsten Stettin's PPA are still downloadable in Gimp 2.10.

Yes, the release notes also state that darktable can be set as a plug-in in Gimp 2.10

While that's true, I had trouble getting it to work - but I wasn't really looking into it, just playing around a little while. And I'm using darktable and GIMP on a GNU/Linux machine - so YMMV.

darktable was called up fine, but saving/exporting back to GIMP caused it to stall and crash - but I hadn't updated my settings for GIMP 2.10. btw. This functionality has been around for a while ... But I actually think RawTherapee makes for a more interesting plugin because you gain so much highly specialised functionality - darktable is the more desirable stand-alone application because it allows for a much quicker workflow (IMO, of course).

Hi Matt,
I'm using RawTherapee so am only quoting the release notes when it comes to use with darktable. I struggled a little at first since I'm used to editing in RawTherapee and then selecting an external editor, namely Gimp to export to. Now as a plug-in once edited in RawTherapee it wasn't intuative to just shut RawTherapee down, but do that and the processed image appears in Gimp ready for any finishing off. I'm also using a linux system, in my case linuxmint 19-cinammon edition

It's entirely possible that my issues are a) issues with darktable or b) my system. I'll re-check, though - should be worth it. That said, I doubt that my knowledge of GIMP and RawTherapee is in any way sufficient to make good use of such a powerful combo. But having darktable (as usual) as a RAW developer and GIMP to do the rest would certainly be helpful.

btw. I'm a long-time Debian/Ubuntu guy (I've used Ubuntu since 4.10 - even contributed to a tiny Ubuntu-based distro called Debris Linux in its day) - which makes Mint familiar territory, in many ways; I'm currently using Cinnamon on top of Ubuntu LTS (18.04.1 at the time of writing) - even though there are no official builds any more (so, PPA ...). I used to customise the heck out of my systems (and maintaining multiple OSes on them all the time), but have settled down quite a bit. Nowadays, I find photography much more rewarding than fiddling with computers ...

I am a late-comer to the party. :D 7.04 was my first Ubuntu distro, and that's when I dumped windows. I am currently running Mate and fall-back on top of 18.04.1.

I have used LightZone for pp for many years now, but it still is unable to open compressed rafs. So I open those in RT, and then the images are exported to LZ for further work. If I need some of the wonderful tools/features of GIMP 2.10, I can select that for particular images from my file manager, and then export them back to LZ, either overwriting the originals or saving them with different filenames.
