The New River Gorge in West Virginia has a long industrial past. Coal mining ceased along the river 40 years ago, and much of it was done well before that. Mining towns were long abandoned or turned into tourist centers. In the case of Mill Creek, the property on which the railway ran was abandoned and reclaimed by the Town of Ansted, and it's now a rail-trail for hikers and bikers. Mill Creek itself drops almost 1,000 feet in elevation its last two miles, lending itself to some stunning scenery. The old mill next to the railway bridge was abandoned decades ago, but I can imagine what it must have been like being in that building between two waterfalls, especially at night.
