I recently picked up a Nikon AW1 for a South Pacific cruise coming up in a few weeks. It's first outing was to Stockton Beach on Boxing Day. It was overcast on the day, though very warm!

I didn't get the opportunity to get it wet, though that will surely come during my cruise.

Yeah, the camels on the beach seemed wrong for so many reasons. I think I liked all the strange contrasts. Particularly all the tourists looking at their phones instead of enjoying the scenery and their camel ride.

Interestingly perhaps, Australia has a huge wild population of them and cull 50,000 or more of these from the outback each year in an attempt to reduce the effect of these now feral animals. After importing them during our colonial past for their resilience in exploration of the country, Australia has started selling thousands back to Saudi Arabia and the middle easy where they are in demand due to their isolated genetic makeup and quality.

my daughter had her AW1 for a year without any issues going on the surface of the ocean, waves, wading in streams, etc. The minute she took it below ten feet she got water in the camera, ruining it. She claims she was careful about keeping the seals lubricated and free of dirt, but this is a common occurrence with this camera and my theory is all you need is the tiniest bit of sand or dirt one any one of the seals and when you are underwater, the pressure forces the water into the camera. In short, I would suggest this camera is primarily designed (i.e. it is 100% reliable) for surface water only. Great camera btw.

The AW1 ended up performing admirably on our cruise. It basically lived with me in the water, never more than 2m deep though. I did re-grease the lens O-ring before the first use & checked it after each day in the water. No issues. It did get dropped a few of times. Once on a hard floor. Surprisingly, other than a tiny chip on the glass screen protector I put on the LCD, I ended up with no scratches or marks on it.

It's definitely convinced me that it makes a great rugged, all round travel camera. Particularly for outdoors. The only thing I had to get used to was clearing the lens of water droplets quite often. I guess there's no overcoming that necessity.

Nice set, Darren. The colours in #2 and #6 would be hard to believe if you hadn't seen them with your own eyes before. I wonder how my Fujis would render them.

Thanks. I thought that also as an afterthought. I have an X-Pro1 and X100s. I actually had the X100s with me, though never used it once. As almost everyone does, I find the Fuji excels at colours, though I find Nikon does very well at replicating natural colours. The water really was like that, and the colour changed continuously depending on the sunlight and degree of cloud cover.
