Sony RX1 and what other camera?

Hi all,

I've been following this forum for a while and found it a useful source of information. I've recently ordered an RX1 and am waiting for it to arrive.

My other gear is:

RX100 - may sell now as can't see me using it.
D700 plus 28mm f1.8 and 50mm f1.8

I can't see me using the D700 either as I'm a keen amateur taking mainly family snaps now. I've photographed family weddings etc but they're all married off so can hang up my dodgy wedding photographer boots :)

What other cameras do you use and do you find yourself still reaching for them now you have the RX1. Unless you have a specialist reason to.

I'd appreciate any input. I'm amazed I got signoff for the RX1 from my wife but with our new baby I played the "memories" card :)

Also do you recommend the EVF?

Thanks,

Tony

To answer your question, it depends on what you like. But that's a cop out - it always depends. So instead I'll just say "get an XE-1 and the kit zoom" and then fail to explain why.

I can't comment on the RX1, but I also have a FF DSLR. I would say ditching the Nikon primes and getting a lens like a 24-120 or similar is a nice way to mix it up. The RX1 could be your everyday camera and the one you use regularly. The D700 might be useful for situations when you may want a zoom. Another option is to pick up an 85 1.8G, and that can be your "telephoto" camera. It boils down to focal lengths.

Selling the Nikon kit and starting up with other stuff is the other options, but I'd recommend at least thinking about redoing the D700 kit, since you have it already.

Welcome. For RX1, I bought a used Olympus 35mm optical viewfinder, much cheaper then the ones that Sony is selling. I will see how it will work on my vacation as they are new to me also. I have the nex viewfinder, but I cannot use it on RX1 and its price was expensive, then discounted due to new RX1 viewfinder. Too bad they are not compatible btw nex and RX1.

For your camera choices, are you going to be using zooms or primes, looking for af or is mf ok?

I am currently using Sony nex and Olympus OMD cameras. I use contax g af adapter and speed booster adapter on nex. Contax g lenses are small and high IQ Zeiss lenses, cheaper then the new ones. You can easily have 45mm, 90mm for long end coverage in addition to RX1. Adapter focus speed is slow but close to RX1 af speed. Speed booster adapter gives the full frame lens dof, not good for landscapes with corner softness but good for portraits/tele end.

M43-Olympus/Panasonic has the best lens selection, splash proof bodies/ lenses with f/2.8 zooms, and the fastest mirrorless af. It is more like dslr replacement for me. They are the only ones with 12-35/35-100 f/2.8 (24-70/70-200mm) coverage. Olympus 12mm, 45mm lenses might be good/small prime option for wide and tele lenses next to RX1.

Other option is Fuji as recommended. They have the best normal zoom kit lenses and very good 14mm/35mm primes.

According to the rumor sites, Sony will be announcing FF lens with Zeiss primes in a month. You can wait for that, but it will be expensive as the only other FF mirrorless is Leica rf cameras. However you can still use other mf lenses on it also. In addition, Sony will be announcing new dslr replacement cameras and nex zoom lenses in a week. If you are looking for zooms with some range:
(SR5) 16-70mm Zeiss has OSS. A3000 (ILC-3000) has new 20 Megapixel sensor. | sonyalpharumors

Thanks for such comprehensive replies. Really appreciate all that.

I'm a bit of a bokeh junkie so tend to stick to fast primes rather than zooms but it does make sense.

If Sony devalue my camera by releasing a better one I'm going round :)

Thanks again. Much appreciated.

FF Sony will come with 35mm 2.8 Zeiss, so it will be hard to replace the RX1 35mm f/2 sonnar lens esp if you like its bokeh...

Well...first off..congrats on playing the memories card...well done. :)

I might not be typical but here is my thinking: I LIKE the 35mm fov and results a lot. I don't have a hankering for another focal length, I value simplicity...no lenses to tote around, no buckets of gear...just a camera, small, light and amazing.

to that end I only have one other camera; the Fuji X100S...that camera fills the one niche that I can see that the RX1 doesn't fill for me; street shooting with a clear (non-TTL) viewfinder....sort of rangefinder-esque.

I see it as complimenting the RX1 when I'm just taking informal snaps, or street stuff where bleeding edge IQ isn't that big of a deal..

that's my "other" camera.

That`s an easy one: Add a RX100II. Same EVF and batteries as the RX1 has. It will assume the spare tire and jeans pocket cam role as you will want to shoot as much as possible with the RX1. But considering its size and versatility, the RX100II is a very convincing little package. Skip the "inbetween" mft, Fuji, NEX, Samsung aps-c offerings as they will not live up to the RX1 files benchmark. Neither does the RX100II, but there are at least other and good reasons to have it in the pocket. I`m afraid, for RX1 users only a Sigma DP Merrill will really satisfy IQ expectations. For ultimate IQ a RX1 & Sigma DP3M combo can be compelling.
