Canon Canon Powershot G7x vs Sony rxiii

DPReview has an update to their preview of the GX7. Seems that Canon is still behind the curve on autofocus. Disappointing.

Micro 4/3 The official I don't want the LX100 thread

Size - this is a slightly downsized Canon G1Xm2, not an upsized RX100. Controls - don't like dedicated dials, especially since they don't have an interlock. Aesthetics - looks chunky, again like the G1X. Pixel count - not quite 180 dpi for 16x24 prints. None of these are necessarily...

    Panasonic Rumor - Panasonic LX8

It's much closer to the Canon G1X II in size than the LX7. For a fixed lens camera these days, 'small' isn't really the adjective that comes to my mind.

    Panasonic Rumor - Panasonic LX8

    Well, that's not such good news. Compared to the RX100m3 (102 x 58 x 41mm) it's 50% thicker.

    Fuji Fuji X30 announced

Neither the lens nor the sensor got a meaningful upgrade. Still a slick camera, but more like an 'X20S'.

    Panasonic Rumor - Panasonic LX8

The more I read about it, the more interested I am. A lot comes down to the lens though - will it be sharp, edge-to-edge, at most apertures? And will it focus close enough to allow near-macro shots.

Sony Sony RX100 III Announced and Available for Pre-Order

If you crop by 1.4x, you'll only be left with ~10MP, since you're cropping by 1.4x in both dimensions. As to DoF, in theory you're right but in practice the greater magnification of the pixels will also have an effect. The real question to me is whether the lens is good enough for pixel level...

Sony Sony RX100 III Announced and Available for Pre-Order

That's good to hear. With the E-M5's EVF, sometimes even the standard eyecup isn't sufficient to shade out the sun when I'm wearing glasses. Another thing I'd be curious to know is the max magnification the lens is capable of (for close-focusing). Can you fill the frame with a quarter? A...

Sony Sony RX100 III Announced and Available for Pre-Order

I wonder how well the EVF, given that it has no eyecup, will work if you wear glasses? Especially in bright light (which is usually when the EVF is most indispensable).

    Olympus Dust on XZ-1 sensor

Well, for anybody who's interested, it is possible to disassemble the XZ-1 to clean the sensor. It's not terribly difficult - you just need a small Philips screwdriver and a good system to catalog all the tiny screws. I basically followed the instructions on this page.

Olympus XZ-1 autofocus modes - AF vs. macro

Does anybody know the technical differences involved in the two autufocus modes AF and Macro? I know that you can focus closer in the macro mode, and it seems that it might be a little slower, but I'm wonder if there are other differences/downsides. I had to disassemble my XZ-1 recently in...

    Panasonic LX7 - $299 from Panasonic Direct

Don't know how long it will last, but I just saw on Facebook that the DMC-LX7 is available again at Panasonic's site for $299.

    Sony RX100 macro capability?

That assumes the lens and sensor are capable of resolving details down the pixel level. From what I've seen of 100% crops from the camera, I don't think that's a safe assumption

    Sony RX100 macro capability?

Thanks, that was exactly what I was looking for. Looks like about 1:6.5, or equal to 1:2.4 in 35mm terms. Not terrible, but not great either...

    Sony RX100 macro capability?

I've been looking various places, but I haven't been able to find any definite numbers as to the magnification the camera is capable of. Does anybody know what the magnification is? Alternatively, can you fill the frame with something the size of a quarter? If not, what is the smallest object...

    Olympus Dust on XZ-1 sensor

I guess that's true, but it's still hard to stomach paying more than 50% of the replacement cost of the device for such a service. The earlier quote of $35 didn't help either. DH

    Olympus Dust on XZ-1 sensor

Well, I finally gave up and had sent it in to Olympus. On the phone, they said the cleaning would be $35 or so. That sounded okay to me. So naturally when they received it, they sent me a bill for $130! That apparently is the flat-rate for XZ-1 repairs. Considering the camera is worth less...

Panasonic Panasonic LX7 - first leaks

It's approx. 1/1.9 (between 1/1.8 and 1/2). The 24mm end is 4.7mm, which means the sensor is slightly smaller than the one in the LX5 (5.1mm) having a diagonal of 8.5mm. The lens is f/1.4-2.3, which is somewhat more exciting, since it's actually taking in more light than the Sony RX100 at the...

Micro 4/3 Has m43 finally lived up to the promise?

I was a longtime 4/3 user before m4/3. I'm now on my 3rd go with m4/3, and by and large I'm pleased. Moreover, I think that unlike 4/3, m4/3 will be around for a good while. The sensor has reached the point of sufficiency - it's not quite as good as the better APS-C ones, but it's good enough...

Has DPR gone completely around the bend or has my tolerance level just dropped?

DPR has always had bouts of insanity when new gear comes out, but the 4/3 (and now m4/3) forums have always been by far the worst. Even the Canon v. Nikon discussions are generally much tamer. I largely blame it on a handful of toxic personalities, some of whom enjoy provoking, and some of...

    Wedding photography - why can't I have the RAW's?

I've never met a professional photographer who would provide RAWs. Even full-sized JPEGs are not the norm. They're being paid for the final output and artists typically are not willing to sell raw (unfinished) work. DH

Does the SEL50 need a profile? Distortion appears very minimal in the reviews and CA can be corrected automatically without a profile. DH

    Sony Sony RX100

My theory is that there simply wasn't a competitive need to, plus the sensors weren't readily available. Now that mirrorless and cell phones are encroaching on the compact market, there's a need to offer something 'unique' to draw in customers (and not lose existing ones). Software correction...

    Sony Sony RX100

Sony has a tradition of selling their sensors to others. Hopefully, that will happen with this one too. Looking at the review on I-R, the only question about the RX100's performance is how the quality of the RAW files are (no standard RAW converters support it yet). DH

    Sony Sony RX100

Wonder if the sensor might be available for others to use too? An Olympus XZ-2 with the 1" sensor, a 24-90/1.8-3.5 zoom range and the XZ-1's hotshoe in similarly-sized package would be quite attractive. DH

    Olympus ND filter on XZ-1

I actually use the ND filter a fair amount. The lens on my XZ-1 seems to be sharpest between f/3.5 and f/4.0, and on a bright day at ISO 100, I often need a shutter speed faster than 1/2000s to avoid blown highlights. The ND filter avoids that problem (shutter speed is down to 1/250-1/500s). DH

Micro 4/3 Need advice on 2nd Olympus body

In terms of image quality, there's no significant difference among the Pens. If anything, your E-PL1 is actually better at both low and high ISOs than the others. The main reason to upgrade is handling and AF speed. The E-PL2 has a bigger grip. The E-PM1 is actually smaller, but has better...

    Olympus Dust on XZ-1 sensor

Hello all, I've had my XZ-1 for about 15 months now. I started noticing spots in my photos a few weeks ago. A test of blue sky at f/8 confirms that there are at least 4 sizable pieces of dust on the camera's sensor. Any idea where I should send it to be cleaned, and about how much they...
