It's much closer to the Canon G1X II in size than the LX7. For a fixed lens camera these days, 'small' isn't really the adjective that comes to my mind.

Well, that's not such good news. Compared to the RX100m3 (102 x 58 x 41mm) it's 50% thicker.

The more I read about it, the more interested I am. A lot comes down to the lens though - will it be sharp, edge-to-edge, at most apertures? And will it focus close enough to allow near-macro shots.

If you crop by 1.4x, you'll only be left with ~10MP, since you're cropping by 1.4x in both dimensions. As to DoF, in theory you're right but in practice the greater magnification of the pixels will also have an effect. The real question to me is whether the lens is good enough for pixel level...

That's good to hear. With the E-M5's EVF, sometimes even the standard eyecup isn't sufficient to shade out the sun when I'm wearing glasses. Another thing I'd be curious to know is the max magnification the lens is capable of (for close-focusing). Can you fill the frame with a quarter? A...

I wonder how well the EVF, given that it has no eyecup, will work if you wear glasses? Especially in bright light (which is usually when the EVF is most indispensable).

Well, for anybody who's interested, it is possible to disassemble the XZ-1 to clean the sensor. It's not terribly difficult - you just need a small Philips screwdriver and a good system to catalog all the tiny screws. I basically followed the instructions on this page.

Does anybody know the technical differences involved in the two autufocus modes AF and Macro? I know that you can focus closer in the macro mode, and it seems that it might be a little slower, but I'm wonder if there are other differences/downsides. I had to disassemble my XZ-1 recently in...

That assumes the lens and sensor are capable of resolving details down the pixel level. From what I've seen of 100% crops from the camera, I don't think that's a safe assumption

Well, I finally gave up and had sent it in to Olympus. On the phone, they said the cleaning would be $35 or so. That sounded okay to me. So naturally when they received it, they sent me a bill for $130! That apparently is the flat-rate for XZ-1 repairs. Considering the camera is worth less...

I've never met a professional photographer who would provide RAWs. Even full-sized JPEGs are not the norm. They're being paid for the final output and artists typically are not willing to sell raw (unfinished) work. DH

Sony has a tradition of selling their sensors to others. Hopefully, that will happen with this one too. Looking at the review on I-R, the only question about the RX100's performance is how the quality of the RAW files are (no standard RAW converters support it yet). DH

I actually use the ND filter a fair amount. The lens on my XZ-1 seems to be sharpest between f/3.5 and f/4.0, and on a bright day at ISO 100, I often need a shutter speed faster than 1/2000s to avoid blown highlights. The ND filter avoids that problem (shutter speed is down to 1/250-1/500s). DH
