Pentax Q with 50mm for $399 at Crutchfield

It goes "psss-click". It's pretty quiet. The 8.5 mm has a leaf shutter but you can override it and use just the electronic shutter. I've used it with adapted lenses and left the shutter sound on just so I would know it went off. I left it at work so I'll check tomorrow.

I just tried out my wife's camera... there is a setting in the menu where you can force the camera to use the leaf shutter, versus the electronic (1/8000 by the way!). Unless I am doing something wrong, and it isn't actually switching to the leaf when I specify, they both sound pretty similar - very quiet "snip", but not quite silent.

I think I may have to buy my wife something else, so I can appropriate this camera. It doesn't do anything that I really am missing, but, man, it is totally cool to the camera geek here (especially at $399 vs 899). Maybe I do need a camera for my keychain after all!

OK, I stopped by the office and tried it. I had exactly this experience. When you change the custom setting for electronic shutter to "on" it sounds the same as when the leaf shutter is triggered. It's very quiet but you can hear it. I question whether the leaf shutter is still firing since the electronic shutter shouldn't make a mechanical noise.

As for the Q, Pentax has managed to get great IQ from a tiny sensor. The controls are also a treat, easy to find and use. It has more limitations (like high iso noise) than other cameras with bigger sensors, but it's a joy to use.

i had considered one for street work, just cause its so tiny
and i tend to lofi like crazy, so i dont really need some super sensor ;)

but i DID just get my x100.. so i dont need it

i dont need it

i dont.

*runs away*

OK, I have a bit more time this morning and I used an adapted lens (the Pentax M 50 mm f4 macro) and the electronic shutter is absolutely soundless, as it should be. This means that the custom function that is supposed to use the electronic shutter as the default isn't working as advertised with the kit prime. It probably means that some other setting is interfering with it, so i will go search. BTW, the Fotodiox Q to K adapter has a built in tripod mount, which is a really nice touch given the light weight of the Q.

oooh it looks like the q is pretty great for macro

Here's a macro taken with an adapted lens, 50 mm. This is a 275 mm (35 mm equivalent).

Focus is really hard but you can get a 4 x magnification assist in MF. One interesting problem is that the diffraction limit for this small a sensor cuts in around 2-2.8. An f4 macro is actually beginning to lose sharpness wide open!

Some more normal shots with the kit prime, the f1.9, 8.5 mm (47 equivalent). I tried to find a range of images.

i read that u can hit HFD on the kit zoom without moving off of the lowest aperature tho, iirc, somewhere on teh interwebs...

Well, I had a little over 2000 points ($76) needing to be spent and this presented the perfect (BS) opportunity. I just got an RX100 yesterday too....which I think is very very nice.
