Just reported on DPReview. No word on price but I would like to think it would be cheaper than the Sony 18-200. The closest equivalent DSLR Tamron lens (18-270) is around $600 - less with the regular rebates.

Nice to see a third party lens appearing - this should mean there are more to come. It's a shame though that they chose to start with a lens that replicates one already in the Sony line-up rather than bringing something new to the table.

Sunds good. Hopefully it wont be as monstrous as the Sony (and its not quite. Much lighter though). I have been toying with the idea of going NEX but the thought of those massive lenses has put me right off. A friend is definitely going NEX, his D80 is not getting a lot of use (if any, really) and I know he will be pleased with this, too.

Length is the same at 4", but a little bit skinnier at 2.8" vs. 3". Weight is 460 grams v. 524 grams.

Pretty exciting to see the first third-party lens with AF for mirrorless cameras FINALLY surface. Maybe we'll see some new lenses for m4/3 as well. I hope.

I don't really desire a super zoom, but it's encouraging to see the first 3rd party AF lens announced. I guess it will be available in a week! (in Japan.)

I wonder what's next. You'd think one of these guys would see the need for the Sony equivalent of the Panasonic 20mm or Samsung 30mm. Just announce it for now, and that will get everyone excited.

I'm not into super zoom eithers, although I was tempted to buy a Pany superzoom camera this morning, just for the heck of it (FZ150).

I'd like to see fast telephoto prime in the m4/3 format. Something like an 85/1.4 or even better, an 100/2.

Don't. Just... don't. Ther Panasonic superzooms have not been "right" since the venerable FZ28. the 35/38 wasnt too bad but most since then have been just not up to Panasonic's usual very high standard. Plasticky feel, mediocre sensor (yes really) and the lens, even though Leica, just isnt that great, with the rest of the firmware/hardware.

The only thing the 47/150 has going for it over the 40/100 is that Panasonic has had the good sense to reduce the pixels to 12MP instead of the 14MP which was what is on the FZ40/100. I have an FZ100 and have been unable to sell it even at a ridiculously reduced price. People know. Nobody is buying. If you want a decent superzoom, make sure you get one with a bigger sensor. (Fuji HS20 or XS1 are the only superzooms I would consider now)

I'm going to have to start using the FZ I have... can't get rid of it, might as well use it. But... it *is* rubbish.

[end rant]

Thanks Sue. I'll resist the temptation then. I have no idea why I got the itch today to buy a superzoom camera. Never even remotely cared for them. Although I did like the compact travel zoom like the Panasonic Z5 at one point. That's actually the camera that started me down this dark path of gear acquisition syndrome ... still spiralling downwards ...

hooray!! It has started at last. Alternatives to the Sony lenses. Lets hope Tamron bring out an E mount version of the 17-50 f2.8!!! I am saying this as i now have a beautiful little NEX C3 which was bought just for my MF lenses!!

This is big news; the first real acknowledgement of mirrorless cameras by a third party lens manufacturer (from the point of view of it being an electronic lens). The 18-200mm focal length seems a bit redundant, and it does appear a bit odd making one of the least compact types of lenses for a compact system camera, but then superzooms are Tamron's bread-and-butter. Unfortunately the fast zoom lens would still appear to be the Holy Grail of CSC lenses...
