... if it's the last thing I ever do.

Just when I thought the deGAS medicine was working I come across a thread about the Ricoh GRX. Starts me thinking and surfing the net and remembering the GRDII I've regretted selling. After much searching and bidding there is a GRDIII on its way to me ($200AUD) from fleabay.
But that's not all - while still defenceless against GAS I read another post about the ClearViewer. Now I've tried many an optical loupe device without being satisfied so I hope the ClearViewer works for me this time. :2thumbs:
And by way of full disclosure - yes I also bought spare batteries.

well, I don't think you will regret either purchase. Look forward to the results Bill.

LOL . . . sounds like you have been looking over my shoulder. I was looking at compact film cameras, which led me to looking at compact tough cameras, which led me to looking at Fuji cameras, which led to me buying a somewhat beat up black Fuji X10. Resistance is futile.

I've lost count of the number of times I've been through a similar process.

However, maybe - just maybe - I've turned a corner on this. The most recent such instance went through the usual routine, and after much indecision about what I should get, it eventually ended with me buying..... NOTHING!! :eek-54::confused:

Maybe I've mended my ways, but of course, it's entirely possible that I'm just kidding myself. ;)

Ha! You too! I picked up an X10 a few months ago. Still a great camera.

Unfortunately, the X10 I received was DOA. The body was in near mint condition, but it had a "Focus Error" message when switched on. The menus worked fine, image playback from the inserted card worked fine, but a firmware upgrade and several resets didn't clear the lens error. There was a 14-day return window, so I sent it back this morning.

OTOH, I found a mint black X30 for about $250 less than what others were asking. Feedback profile was fine, so I took the chance and bought it. I liked the X10/20/30 form factor, and have missed the first X30 I sold. Hopefully, there will be no issues with this one.

Even used x30's aren't offered for much less than 400 euros here... I think it goes to show just how much demand there is for these cameras. Hope fuji will return to that market segment sometime soon...

I looked at "Sold" listings on eBay. They ranged from a little over $100, all the way to $700+, with several over $500 and $600. It's a nice camera, but even new, I think it's about a $400 camera. I've watched prices climb slowly but steadily since the X30 was discontinued.

Regarding Sue's comments above, have a look at the simulations below, comparing the X30 to the Panasonic ZS100 (TZ100) and the Panasonic LX100. The ZS100 has a 1" sensor with an equivalent FL stretching to 250mm, and the LX100 has a Micro 4/3 sensor. Both are smaller and lighter than the X30. All have an EVF, but the X30 adds the tilting screen. The X30 also has a fast f2-f2.8 lens, which I suspect has a lot to do with the size of the camera. I rented the LX100 once when I was considering buying one. The zoom range is slightly shorter than the X30, and the IQ was good, but I like the Fuji control layouts better. Another option in a similar size is the 1" Panasonic LX10, but it doesn't have an EVF.

Another decent compact camera with a one-inch sensor and very good EVF is the Canon G5X. 24-100mm zoom, f/1.8-2.8. I'm fine with results up to and including ISO 3200. It's a power zoom but you can use the control dial around the lens for it (or for aperture), which works well.

Faults? Burst shooting in raw is slow (but fine in jpg) and it doesn't do 4K video. Some people say the lens is soft in the corners at wide angles but I've been pleased with the results that I get. Battery life is mediocre, so I have two batteries. At least Canon provides a proper plug-in wall charger (no cable required).

This camera is not styled like a rangefinder but, rather, like a mini DSLR. But very mini. So that's a subjective plus or minus.

I was told by a Canon rep that this camera may be updated to Mark II status this year. So the existing G5X may be discounted soon. After a few years, the camera still seems to be holding its value quite well, both in the new and used markets.

I used to think that but can you imagine how big it will be?
When I first saw the X30 I couldn't believe how big it was (bigger than the LX100) - definitely too big for my idea of a compact camera. However, looking at cameras like the LX100 (m43), RX100-III/IV/V (one inch, EVF, fast lens), ... a one-inch successor wouldn't necessarily have to be larger than the X30. All up to Fuji of course but they better keep that thing small if they want my €€€ :)

I'm done buying/swapping for a while, even if Fuji surprises us with a 1" X40. (I've never been an early adopter of gear.) A new-ish X30 will arrive in a couple of days. I was going to downsize to just that and sell everything else, but I thought about it overnight and deleted the eBay listing for my other Fuji gear. I decided there would be times I'd miss the DR of the X-T1. Between the X30 and my two pint-sized film cameras, I can stuff a camera in my cargo pants on a moment's notice.
