I know it's crazy, but I've changed us back to SC

Amin

Hall of Famer
First of all, I'm sorry for the flip flopping .

It's been about two years since the site changed from SC to PL (link). I know some of our members use gear that isn't so compact, but I still think of us as S.C. Some of us still even type it that way in the browser.

As flawed as it is as a description of our site and it's members, in retrospect I think changing from SC wasn't a good change. Some may disagree or agree, but I hope everyone will continue to enjoy the site. Regardless of the name, it's always been the members that make the place.

New logo coming soon...

I applaud the change back. I wouldn't have found this place except that I had been searching for information about "serious" compact cameras.

Now, I realize that many compact cameras have gone by the wayside because of the advent of better cameras in smart phones, but I think there are now more "serious" compact cameras than ever. (And if you can believe some of the reports I've seen online, the superzoom/travelzoom segment is the only one that is growing . . . I don't know if that is true or not.)

I would define a serious compact camera as: (1) any fixed lens camera, regardless of sensor size, such as Sony RX cameras, Leica Q, LX100, Ricoh GR, Nikon A, and so forth and (2) any interchangeable lens camera that is either small in size or has a relatively small sensor.

Having said that, I wouldn't want to exclude any camera or format. I have learned a great deal from people who shoot larger formats. What I have loved about this place from the beginning is the nice, relaxed feel, courtesy, general helpfulness, and willingness to discuss without rancor.

Finally, Amin, FWIW I think SeriousCompacts makes more sense from a marketing standpoint than Photographers Lounge. Each of your other discussion forums has a defined niche: Leica, Fuji. M4/3. SeriousCompacts, while broader than the others, is more defined and focused (good pun, no?) than Photographers Lounge.

Cheers, Jock

There are sure to be some glitches, like I just noticed the "Winner" button went missing. Please kick the tires and let me know what's broke.

In my mind, it didn't change the first time. So now you're all up to my speed again. Which is slow. But them again, I'm often afraid that like Luke, old age came early for me. The other day, I even told my kid that it wasn't real music he was listening to. The earth moved under my feet, from my parents rolling over in their graves, laughing.

What's interesting is that as the cheap and cheerful P&S market has evaporated we've been inundated with a whole new class of 1" serious compacts and superzooms. The Sony RX100 and Nikon 1 were early entrants but the field has grown a lot in the last 2 years. I wonder if purchasers are stepping up from a phone, supplementing larger sensor kit, or a little bit of each.

In either case, the new(old) name works for them.

The name of the site changed before?

I will echo Jock's concern about anyone feeling left out. You don't have a site for "all the other DSLRs". I'm suggesting you start another forum. But on the home page there is SeriousCompacts.com, maybe add some text there? In the forum section the first group is "Interchangeable-Lens Cameras" with just about every option available, no I'm not suggesting you change that either. Just maybe there is some way to highlight it so someone coming to the site the first time knows we're an all inclusive happy group here.
