Fuji X-T1 GAS attack #2 (the me also thread)

El Guapo

Regular
I did not jump on board the initial flurry of excitement when the X-T1 was released some years ago. I checked one out at a dealers many months back. It was always a bit highly priced for me. I did sometime ago dump all my m43 gear on the used market and never replaced it with anything. My Ricoh GR and DP2M spoiled me for IQ and the m43, while very nice was just lacking. I also could not shift my brain around the EM5s operation quickly enough at the frequency I used it.

Enter a Fuji cashback deal and I've just bought an X-T1 at what I see as a great price. I am looking to bond a 35mm XF to it soon. Initial fondle with the XT1 body surprises me with the weight. Its muuuch lighter than i thought. I am keen to see if that unique Fuji control layout will help me with the control issues I had with the EM5. As an X (ex?) X100 user I am somewhat familiar. I also want the 14mm prime as I was very much a Zuiko 21mm user in my OM4 days. Past that I doubt I will need more with the GR or DP2M as well.

I am looking forward to making some portraits and utilizing that EVF in our harsh bright light we sometimes have here.
Here's hoping this is a keeper.

Good luck, and ask questions!

Cheers thanks. While there is an offer, I mainly try to use out of camera jpgs but will post process if it warrants it.
Are the results with Lightroom considered good these days? While I have other options its the only RAW processor that seem to gel with me.

Congratulations! You won't regret it. The X-T1 is wonderful to shoot with.

LR6/CC works perfectly with x-trans files. I recently compared D810 raw processing with X-T1 raw processing in LR. The complaint about foliage does not have anything to do with bayer vs x-trans but with LR. Processing in Silkypix (or other) improves foliage details equally well in NEF and RAF.

Each raw processor has advantages and disadvantages but I do not see noticeable differences in handling of fuji raw and other raw. Apparently it is difficult to silence the criticasters on the web.

If you get the settings right, for in-camera JPG you won't need to to do too much LR work. In fact, I only use LR the same way I used PS Elements, crop, resize, apply Watermark and export for Web. The driving reason for me to use LR are my plug-ins. But when it comes to Fuji, more often than not SOOC is good enough.

Dropping the highlights to -1 in the in-camera settings improved my jpg's drastically. When I switched from the old Bayer X100, I struggled to get highlights that didn't blow out until I figured that out. Your mileage may vary... but give it a shot.

Although this thread is about 10 months old, I didn't see a point in starting a new one just to say "me, too". A gently used X-T1 is on its way to me to replace the now sold X-E1. Gotta have a flippy screen. The one thing I really liked about the various Sony and Olympus cameras I've owned was a tilting LCD. I have had a habit in recent years of buying a camera, using it a few months, and selling it. I think the longest I used any one camera was 18 months (at least I always look for good deals on used gear). Had a lot of fun, got a lot of great pics, but I was hooked after renting an X100S. Liked the jpg quality a lot. If I like the X-T1 as much as I like my X100, there will be no need to trade for a long time.

TT

I flip cameras a lot, but some are keepers. I've had my E-M5 since it came out and I suspect my Pen F will be with me until one of us dies. It's mostly compacts I flip, often only to turn around and reacquire what I sold shortly before.

I keep putting an xt10 in my cart and then deleting it. I'm weakening, however. Fuji does have a different look which makes it somewhat "complementary" to mu43. OTOH, I did have an x100s and ended up selling it for lack of use. I'm currently trying to remember why I didn't use it. Maybe I just need a therapist.

When you say looking at bonding a 35mm XF to it, are you talking one of the 35mm focal length lenses or a 35mm FOV?

If talking about the first, I would like to recommend the newer 35mm f/2. While it may not gather as much light as the original f/1.4, it AFs much faster, quieter. It is also a WR lens(weather sealed).

If you are talking about a 35mm FOV, then the XF 23mm lens is a killer prime and you'd love that too.

I re-got the X-T1.

I would like to talk you down off the ledge, but that is NOT how GAS goes away. GAS goes away when you realize you don't need new gear. The only cure for GAS is ACQUIRING the GEAR!

But my opinion is that you will end up selling it again....m43 is your sweet spot. As much as I love keeping the Fuji 35mm f1.4 on it, I actually usually have a zoom on it. So maybe I WANT more awesome PURE IQ, but I prefer less IQ with more flexibility/convenience.

You can add me to the new X-T1 owners, how could I not with the price dropping in light of the new X-T2. It was pure G.A.S. Trouble is, I have most focal lengths on m43 but I've convinced myself that the X-T1's a better fit for my Takumar 50mm f1.4 and that the 23mm F2 is better than the 17mm f1.8, so that's alright then.

I didn't cancel this time, so I have a used XT10 and the 27mm coming my way. Thinking back, my problem with the X100S was my technique has come to rely on the IBIS of my Olympus cameras even as comparatively short FL. I'll try again to see if I can mange without making motion blur.

can i please tap the brains of the new xt1 owners: i have a nice copy with charger & 2 batteries, no box, that i want to sell. what is a reasonable asking price?
