Canon Advice needed on Canon M vs Sony RX100

Hi all. I have just recieved an offer from a major electronic shop here in Italy: Canon M + 22mm + flash ex90 + Ef adapter for 199 euros.

I'm really tempted but have to ask a few questions.
It will not be my main system because I use Nikon D7100 and Olympus E-P5 as main cameras, it should replce my Sony RX100 as a high quality portable/pocketable camera.
My question is: is the Canon better than the RX100 IQ wise and is there a lens that can match more or less the 28-100 reach? I know one of its major issues was AF but seems after latest firmware it should be OK, is it right or is AF still sluggish?
Can it be a good replacement for my Sony RX100?

Thank you for your help and suggestions.

I've had them both. The M with the 22 will certainly provide better IQ than the Sony, but for me that came with too many limitations. I either had to be shooting stills or posed people. Any little bit of movement sort of doomed my shots. And that was with latest firmware. While the AF was improved greatly, it still is not as good as the Sony, and to me not good in general. Just OK. If I were in your shoes, with two nice system cameras, I'd want the portability and convenience of the Sony, If I lacked the higher end gear I'd be tempted to go with the Canon and deal with the limitations, just to have the option and possibility of that greater IQ.

I never used any lens but the 22 and the kit zoom (18-55 iirc). The zoom was OK, but it lived in the box; the 22 is special. Without the 22 I think the M would already be forgotten.

At that price point, 199 euros, I just wondered if I could give it a try but maybe you're right and it is not worth it. The special offer expires tomorrow so I can take a bit more time to think about it.
The truth is that I have always been curious to try Canon's jpg and colours because I'm a jpeg shooter. I saw this as a not expensive way to try.

I would imagine you could get most of that money back on the secondhand market if you don't get along with it, but am not current on used prices in your part of the world.

I saw them used much more costly than what I would get new. Honestly I don't now if they sell quickly because there seems to be little request. They are not very popular here.

I think the 22mm is a fantastic lens, but it will not replace an RX100's zoom.

What is it about the RX100 you don't like? In my opinion -- both cameras have quirky controls that are not very great. Both require working around their controls. Both cameras are pocketable. Both have good (not great) high ISO. The 22mm lens far outshines the RX100 at 35mm equivalent in terms of shallow DOF, and lens qualities like bokeh, sharpness, micro contrast, but at all other focal lengths, you will be missing out.

If you are fine with just one focal length, then I think the M is a great camera, but if you must have zoom, then I think the M comes up short. Also, the auto focus on the Sony is much, much faster, if that is important to you.

That's a pretty cheap M kit. The M /22 is a nice little camera, a poor man's x100 without the VF. Why not buy and try it for a while? Sell the one you don't want or keep both.

As an owner, and daily user, of an EOS-M I can attest to it's capabilities. This is an excellent camera that has been much maligned due to initial slow auto-focus, now corrected through firmware update, and a lack of understanding of how to use the camera. Many posters who claim knowledge are just regurgitating what others have wrote, non of whom have owned it or even used it.

Here are the key elements to consider and compare:

Large sensor - Canon APS-C
Touch screen, including touch screen Auto-focus
Excellent lenses - 11-22 zoom, 18-55 zoom, 55-200 zoom, 22mm prime, all excellent all metal Canon lenses
Excellent IQ
High dynamic range
Clear bright screen, easy to use, even in bright sun
Canon menus, the same as all Canon DSLRs

Up to you, but at 199 euros, not much of a risk IMO.

Cheers[emoji3]

I had left it because of confusing opinions. How is jpg iq sooc? I'm a jpg shooter.

I have the EOS M only because it was silly cheap and I thought I would be happy to put up with the little extra bulk in order to have what is essentially a compact with an APS-c sensor. I have the 18-55 which is pretty good and the 22mm is excellent. I may get the 11-22 as this lens is supposed to be really good!

For what I do the AF is well fast enough for me on the latest firmware.

I just ordered one for the same reason: less than 150 euros for the complete package with the 22mm. I had decided to pass on but the store made a great offer so I want to give it a try.
Can you tell me how is jpeg output because I'm a jpeg shooter and what settings you use.

Thanks.

Sorry, I only shoot RAW but the files should be the same as the 600D as this is essentially what the EOS M is internally. Basically it will be very good! :)
