Identification of a moth I found in my house

Thats a Сингапур дом моли in Russian ……. according to Prince Charles, though his Russian is only very basic as taught to him by Camilla, so the words may be the wrong way round

All moth names will now be in Russian according to my sources

Everyone grab Google

Barrie AKA grebeman, might well know if Luke isn't right. Great detail!

There are certain facts missing from this request to identify this moth.

1. Location - since Tiew gives his location as Singapore can we assume that this is where this moth was photographed. If so then the suggestion made by Luke refers to a moth that occurs within the USA and is there fore not the species photographed.

2. Size. Whilst it doesn't make for an artistic shot, any insect photograph submitted for identification purposes needs a scale to be included alongside the beast. Is the wingspan 1" or 3", we have no idea. Also I note in the description of the moth species selected by Luke it talks about a slim body typical of a Geometer moth, the beast photographed has anything but a slim body. The body is actually reminiscent of a Hawk Moth, but I have no experience of moths outside the UK, and with over 2,000 species in the UK, I am not able to offer any ideas, other than to say, good try Luke, but sorry mate, NO!

I've just started hunting on the internet, there are an estimated 120,000 species of moth in the world, I might be some time :)

It translated as Singapore House Moth in English. But I don't think it is that species.

Barrie

Sorry Barrie. Not enough information was given. My bad.

Anyway, I found this moth in Singapore, it was right outside my room and not too small. The wingspan is around 1 inch (slightly lesser than 1 inch). I found it at night and it was pretty quite and doctile and not moving much at all.

Always one for understatement, Barrie. Only "an estimated 120,000 species of moth in the world, I might be some time.";)

haha .. and with a flourished wave from his cape, he turned and vanished into the old dusty library to pour through the ancient tomes of natural history, compiled by long forgotten explorers from the old world and the new world.

I am not an expert of bird ID ……. but over the last couple of years my knowledge has improved………. with the help of Barrie and spending endless nights flicking thru Field Guides

On another forum I occasionally ID a bird …… and one guy in particular takes a lot of bird shots but never seems to know what the bird is, if he names it he is always wrong. I have ID'ed his shots quite a few times.

A few weeks ago he PMed me and asked which web site I used to ID his bird images and he thought all I did was to upload a copy of his image to the site and bingo the name of the bird flashed up in the browser ………

Anyway Good Morning to you all

I wish I could access some dusty tomes, rather than what is turning out to be an internet poorly documenting the area concerned, and to have been a long forgotten explorer would have suited me down to the ground, born too late and missed my true vocation.
