Wondering about focus speed: telephoto zooms on NEX6 vs. Fuji XE1

Hall of Famer
I've got mainly NEX, but I just bought Luke's XE1 (thanks Luke!)

Wondering how the Fuji telephoto options (55-200 or 50-230) would compare vs. a NEX 6 with the 55-210.

I know these are not the fastest lenses/bodies, but they are in my budget. I actually have the 55-210 on my NEX 6 and it's OK. Not great. I might want to go with Fuji instead, but only if it's at least as good.

I've never tried the Sony telephoto. I've used both of the Fujis, though, and I'd say they're OK on the XE1 and better than OK on the newer XE2 or XT1. As with m43, a lot of the focus speed is down to the processor in the camera and the XE2 and XT1 have PDAF sensors and generally faster AF than the earlier models. I'd assume this would be true in the Nex world as well, with the A6000 probably faster than the Nex6 or earlier. But in terms of comparing the two, I can't help you unfortunately...

Bill, are you going to choose between the NEX and the Fuji, or planning to keep and shoot them both? I'll be curious to hear your thoughts on how they compare.

Bill, I only tried the SEL55210 on my NEX-7 once and it didn't blow me away either. I rarely shoot at focal lengths beyond the range of a standard zoom anyway so I could hardly justify splurging out the 650€ on the XF 55-200mm. I still have a 75-150mm/f3.5 E-series Nikkor in a box somewhere though and if you're OK with manual glass you might want to google it up. I used to shoot it on my F3 for many years and it's been an excellent performer on that camera - fast (constant f3.5), sharp as a tack with good contrast and colors and on top of that it's pretty compact and can be had for next to nothing these days.
Just my 2 photons ...

Hi Dean,

I think for now I'll likely keep both. I got some fast 50s that are decent enough to shoot on the NEX, and I have a FE lens. Also, the NEX6 is compact. But the native lenses are just so boring on NEX. I picked up the XE1 because I do like the Fuji colors, and I wanted a decent zoom and to get into the Fuji shooting experience. I'll let you know how it goes after a couple of weeks.

All I have on the NEX in e-mount is the Sigma 19mm, a Rokinon FE and the 55-210. The Sigma is actually pretty nice. The 55-210 is out of necessity, not desire. The FE is because the value of the lens collapsed, so I might as well keep it. My other lenses are legacy 50s with speedbooster adapters. Rokkor 45/2 speed boosted, which actually creates a really nice image.

It's pretty much the same with my NEX-7, it still looks like new but has a big speck of dust in the EVF and I probably wouldn't get much more than 300€ these days so I rather keep it.
@ Dean ... the 7 has amazing IQ at base ISO when shot RAW (albeit ever so slightly noisy - the jpgs suffer from over-agressive NR, starting right at base ISO) and compared to my XP1 it's much smaller and lighter with better ergonomics (grip), hi-rez flip-up screen, focuses noteably faster and in good light the EVF wipes the floor with that on the Fuji. Focus peaking works a lot better on the Sony too, needless to mention video. Together with the 19 & 30mm Sigmas the 7 makes for a mean little street, travel or landscape machine. Add a good legacy 50 or the SEL50f18 and you have a very capable, flexible and compact multi purpose kit.
