Let us hope that they are smart enough to include a viewfinder of some sort.

I'd bet it will be the same old crappy, tiny, mostly useless tunnel VF. Not EVF, not even proper optical.

You may very well be right, Sue. But Nikon seems to have seen the light, at least somewhat, with its P7800, which has an EVF and a 28-200mm zoom range at f/2.0-4.0. Canon and Nikon are like Honda and Toyota: Locked in a holy war. There's no way Canon will not respond to the P7800 and attempt to outdo it. Yes, it'll probably be the latest 1/1.7" sensor but who knows what we'll get in terms of a lens, aperture and viewfinder.

There's no way a lens like that will be fitted to a 1" sensor - the lens would be twice the size of the one on the Sony RX10. So it might be serious, but it surely wouldn't be compact. Either the lens spec or the sensor spec on that rumor is wrong, because that lens alone will weigh well over 2 pounds if it were true.

I wouldn't be totally shocked if it has no built-in viewfinder but is compatible with the same detachable viewfinder that was announced with the G1X Mark II. It might depend on the size and form factor of the camera but then the Sony RX100 Mark II is tiny and yet still offers the ability to attach a relatively large viewfinder.

It was the viewfinder that made me turn away from the G series. I'd rather have no OVF than a bad one.

With respect, I go the other way: I'd rather have a bad OVF than none. I've proven to myself that I can shoot steadier with the camera pressed against my face.

That made shots like this one from the G12 possible:

But . . . different strokes for different folks.:D

I take your point. I prefer shooting with a viewfinder myself, unless the camera is on the tripod. I use hotshoe mounted OVFs on my Sigmas and that works well enough. They cost me £340/$566, which is about the price of a half-decent camera, but it's worth it for a more pleasant shooting experience and better results.

This is true. but I still wont be interested, even with an EVF, unless they also bring back the vari-angle LCD screen. I used to use mine on my G11, a *lot*. Its awkward in that it has to flip out to the side, but I still prefer it to the tilting screen which is why I have never bought a camera (since my abortive attempt to like the Nikon P100) with a tilter.

Absolutey agree with Jock its the extra steadiness of holding against the face that counts for me
plus in bright light you at least know what you are pointing at rather than looking at your own bad hairdo on the lcd

If the lens is as long as is purported with a 1" sensor, it would be something in the league of the Sony RX10 and more like a superzoom. That's a completely different camera from the G series. And if they managed to make it more the size of the G1X II, it would cause some confusion in the buying public, as there would be less to distinguish them, physically.

Anyone else remember this camera?

ReD,

There was a review on DPreview last year (I think) in which they highly rated a "rugged" camera but complained that the rear screen was very difficult to see in bright sunlight (and no viewfinder). I asked the reviewer how it could be so highly rated when this appeared to be as close to a fatal flaw in a camera as I could imagine. I mean, you really DO need to see what you are shooting . . . or at least I do.

Cheers, Jock

If you're a lousy photographer it may actually be an advantage.

I can shoot short lenses <25 comfortably off a non-tilting rear screen. But the EM5 has really reminded me how often I will actually use an EVF if I have one.
