Micro 4/3 I am going straight to hell - bought an O-MD E10

So, having already moved to the dark side by swapping out my Sony A77 for a MILC (X Pro 1 and went MILC for no other reason than at the moment it fits my shooting needs better than an SLR/SLT)) I have now secured my place on the 4th or 5th level of hell by purchasing an OM-D E-10.

The thing is, I didn't mean to - honestly m'lud. All I wanted was a camera smaller than my X Pro 1 and one that had a zoom lens (I also have a Ricoh GRD IV and a Sigma DP2M so no one can accuse me of being a loyalist to any one sensor tech or brand but I don't have anything with a zoom!). I also wanted a fixed lens camera so off I went to buy a Fuji X20 (ideally I want a camera with a flash hotshoe)

I had a search around online but wanted to play with one in a shop so a quick check of the Jessops website (for those not in the UK a camera chain - they're OK, nothing special but tend to stock a good range).

Having checked prices, sizes etc it struck me I may as well consider a small MILC - say an EOS M, NEX 5T EL-P5, GM1 etc as it didn't have to be pocketable, just noticeably smaller than my X Pro 1 and a reasonable kit zoom so I thought why limit myself to a fixed lens compact.

Anyway I get to Jessops, and had a really good play with having played with the NEX 5T & 6, EOS M, X-A1, GM1, E-PL5 and E-PM2

Then I decide I may as well at least pick up the OMD-10 and it was in love at first sight (or maybe hold). What a lovely lovely camera. Supreme build quality, small but with great handling (coming from SLR's/SLT's I like direct dial access to aperture etc), very nice EVF - perfect. It just felt so right and I wanted it to feel wrong - I really did.

OK it was almost double what I had set as a max budget but the O-MD was just better in almost every respect.

I now feel I have the best of both worlds when it comes to MILC's - I love the X Pro 1 and for street / urban its fantastic with the XF 35mm bolted on and with the XF 18mm or 14mm it is great for landscapes.

That said it the Fuji is not so good for a fast moving toddler and the OM-D is nice and small and with the M4/3 sensor better for wildlife on a budget. I prefer the size of the available zooms for the Oly as well (plus I am looking only to use primes on the X Pro 1). I like to have at least one camera with some form of OIS as well.

Will post some photos once I have had chance to use it in anger...

Nah, A7r!
Nay, Armando, I hath consulted Beatrice and she quoth the A7R lies closer to the centre of the nine circles…but first one must traverse the edges of the 4/3rds and then APS-C arcs before entering the regions of the full frame. But warning she also giveth, ahhhh beyond the veil where the flames burn a brighter white and at greater height they there lickth the Leica.

there lickth the Leica.

Be afraid; be very afraid!

(A couple of years ago, I entered the Oskar Barnack contest with some of my sky photos, hoping to walk away with the M9 and the Noctilux. I mentioned this to my Better Half, and she said, "Would you really feel comfortable walking around with a camera and lens that's worth the price of a car?" Good question, I think.)

Cheers, Jock

Hey, if I'm a tourist in Hell I can think of no other camera I'd prefer around my neck...
