Just bought an RX1. As do most, I went back and forth as to whether it made better sense to get the "R" version. Ultimately, opted for non-R as I found no visual evidence that it would produce noticeably sharper or otherwise higher-quality RAW images.

So, the journey begins. I ordered a second battery and a 3rd party charger. Although, I'm wondering whether I should grab even a third battery, as I'll be traveling imminently.

Also, is there a reasonable consensus on a ND filter, so as to be able to shoot wide open in daylight conditions? I may have already asked, but I forget.

Thanks!

Congratulations! The RX1 is a great camera.

I have four batteries, although I've never needed more than two in a day. Nevertheless, if I were you, I'd purchase a third. This is especially true if you get the EVF (which I strongly recommend -- it transforms the camera), as the EVF seems to drain batteries faster.

I don't have an ND filter for my RX1, but I do have a polarizing filter, which is a B+W, as are all my filters. I've been very satisfied with the B+W filters. I don't think you'll actually need an ND filter, though. I've not had a problem with running out of shutter speed in bright light even wide open, perhaps because I habitually shoot the RX1 at +2/3 EC. And it can handle even greater overexposure with no problem.

Enjoy!

no real need for an nd filter, its only 2.0 WO and iso goes to 50.

what you might want to consider are both the evf, which is state of the art, and the Really Right Stuff grip. both of these absolutely vaulted the ergonomic experience for me.

congrats, enjoy and i look forward to seeing what you do with it.

I also have just become the owner of an RX1. Should arrive early next week.
Got to say I am rather excited about this camera. Evf included. :D

Thanks, everyone, for the good tips!
I'll likely not have time to get any filters before I leave for my travels, anyway, so it'll be a better opportunity to test the specific capabilities of the camera, to its fullest.

I must say, as others have commented, Sony sure spared EVERY expense with the packaging of this camera. I wasn't expecting Apple or Leica boxing, but man alive! I'm surprised they didn't just send it in an old shoe box.

yeah, and no charger, no good buffering, horrible battery life, at times nasty jpeg engine, inferior auto iso functioning etc. but they got the RAW engine right. boy did they get that right!

I got a B&W 3-stop ND for bright sunlight shooting with a speedlight @f2. Works great, though 4-stops would probably help in some places. I've have a B&W ND400 for longer daytime exposures. A 10 stop ND would be nice for this....I still have yet to get a circular polarizer for it though, that is definitely next on the list.

It'll have to wait a little while though, since I recently traded my 28/2 ZE for a 21/2.8 ZE + cash... oh the fun I'm having with THAT lens.

I find the jpegs from this camera to be just fine. I do tweak them occasionally for exposure or white balance but no more so than my other cameras. DP Review likewise opined that the jpegs from the RX1 were very good.

I took delivery of my RX1 this week. Not finding much time to shoot though. What a lovely camera. Scored from biglouis. (cant help thinking you might regret it later Louis):)
Tis a mint low mileage example though, with evf hood and batteries. Hopefully I'll get some serious shots tomorrow when I visit Whitehaven for the day.

Nice, nothing more frustrating than a new camera and bad weather ! Looks as though we're in for a week of rain and storms down South :( Why did Louis get rid of his RX1?

I have never encountered this Nasty jpeg engine in my rx1, not even 'at times', after many thousands of shots, my son whom is darn good at photoshop and loves raw has battled with LR and PS trying to get a raw file to match the jpegs we see.

I'll take this a step further, they are the best jpegs I have ever dealt with, easily beating the Fuji jpegs of the Xm1..... Now this is just my opinion, I know everybodys milage will differ.

i also am confused by the bad jpg talk. does someone had a sample of a bad jpg from the rx1 with a corresponding good raw file processed out into a new jpg? i dont ask because i doubt you, just that mebbe im not noticing it? and id like to? so i can obsess over it and panic and send luke a private msg flooded with terror... lol :D id just like to see really. im not super pixel peepery, so im wondering if its just that which is making me unaware?

ok too many words to diplomatically side step saying SHOW ME SOME EXAMPLES!

hop to! *snaps fingers*

;)

or is there a thread im missing already with them?

oh, also, i had 3 batteries, lost one about 2 weeks into ownership, and havent really had a need for 3 yet. i find that 2 does me good on mirrorless cams. ive only rarely dipped into a 3rd, and then just BARELY. it just adds too much battery rotation hassle for me... but im lazy like that :D

then i guess i must be either lying or stupid. and i have several lying/stupid accomplices who have seen the effects in my photos, in theirs, or both.

in fact, the DP review of the A7, which has either exactly the same or substantially similar sensor, has also made quite a big deal out of jpeg 'banding' and 'posterization' of exactly the kind i get. but we shouldnt pay any attention to those idiots over there at DP.

i have the camera, i mostly like the camera, when its 'on' its awesome. its not always 'on'. im glad you dont see or have this problem. i do. others do.

hi eliot

here is one thread:

what is causing this my 'banding' problem?

i think there is another somewhere, and the issue has been 'hotly' discussed in the Manual Focus Lens Forum relative to the A7 DP review:

The Sony A7 review on Dpreview

you might want to try what i did and shoot raw + jpeg for a few sessions. i personally was pretty amazed at what i saw, even comparing 'clean' jpegs to the raw counterpart. i never shot raw before this camera, now i pretty much only shoot raw with it.

Nobody said you are lieing or stupid, you or all of DP review or whoever else you want to throw in, I am merely saying I have NEVER had these issues and that is my opinion, no need for you to get hurt feelings and rant like this simply because I disagree and disagree strongly.. so settle down when somebody doesn't see it your way, I acknowledge this entire fine forum might disagree with me on this point.... In my eyes, the Rx1 jpegs is the best I have encountered.

I also have the A7 and the Zeiss 35mm f/2.8, and the jpeg from the Rx1 is superior to it in my eyes, for whatever reason.

lucille, its not a rant and its not an opinion. its out there for anyone to see. its not seeing it my way, its that you discounted others seeing it at all. and yeah, that kinda pissed me off.

time-out.

Let me ask everyone to pause.

Lucille loves the JPEGs. Tony has issues with them.

There are two different "opinions" and they can coexist. Tony can dislike the JPEGs and Lucille can love them. There's no reason for anyone to escalate this.

Ok, get pissed then, because I don't see it. Now go pout and cry and rant because somebody doesn't see what you see. I am sure many will agree with your findings, I absolutely don't. I never once discounted others seeing it, which is why in my intial post I said your milage may vary. I SAID I DON'T SEE IT. See how easy that was?
