GoPro HERO3 White Edition

Amazing device ! ...if he hasn't used one before he'll be blown away.

Really excellent quality for such a small unit...as you could well imagine there will be a noticeable difference between shooting in good versus bad light, it is after all JUST a camera so it too operates within the limits of its sensor & lens.

I used mine (the original version) a few years back when snowboarding in Canada and got some excellent footage of our group riding some amazing terrain....great times, great memories. The camera does really well...in good light it's exceptional, the stabilisation is surprisingly good and it's such an easy machine to use.

Tell him to bring lots of memory cards and to hit the record button often.....record for longer, not only will he get MORE footage which he can edit at any point but I found it easier to deal with fewer large clips rather than countless 10 second clips......and finally, record at the absolute highest resolution the device allows.

Recently sold my GoPro 1 and will be keeping an eye out for version 4 due for release in June/July I believe.

BTW....get him to do a quick check of the GoPro website for firmware updates....I believe that the Hero3 underexposed and required a firmware update (easily done via the memory card). If he bought it retail and it's new stock chances are the firmware is up to date though !

Santa brought my wife one for Christmas even though we don't exchange gifts. She's just used it a couple of times, but the quality is quite amazing. I find it almost incomprehensible for a camera to have no viewfinder or LCD screen, but I guess once you get used to the filed of view it will capture, you'll kind of understand what will be in your frame. The camera is kind of a one trick pony, but it really excels at the one trick. I predict I'll be listing hers on eBay before next Christmas.

I'm looking for a good way to attach it to one of our dogs and instigate a wrestling match. Slo-mo dog wrestling FTW!

Our dog would have eaten it given half the chance - she seemed to have a penchant for the taste of plastic of all flavours

I've been looking at the Go Pro Black to replace the Contour V.Hold I've used for a few years. That still works despite taking a direct hit on rock when it parted company with the quadcopter after it caught a tree branch which broke one of the rotors. The chopper went down into a raging Scottish waterfall but the camera came away fom it and landed on a rock far below, we (well my son) manged to retrieve it but it looks pretty battered now.

The angle of view on these "point and pray" cameras is so wide that you usually get whatever you want into shot quite easily. I've used the Contour for all sorts of things, but mostly travel - roadtrips and such - and usually when I'm out for a day on the bike. My lad has a helmet mount he uses it on but I prefer it mounted on the bars.

Video shot last year in Europe going over a few mountain passes in the Alps:
