Sony How the RX1 has made me a better photographer...

nice article. I'm feeling that way about my new rx1. i do have the evf and feel it helps me immensely in both composition and execution.

what software do you use? I'm using LR but I'm not happy with it and I'm wondering if the sony engine needs a better software pairing

I shoot raw & develop in LR5 for 99% of my shots. I'll open up photoshop if I need to do some heavy post work occasionally.

What specifically do you not like about LR?

Nice writeup and some great photos! Thanks for sharing!

While I never had G.A.S. to a huge degree (as opposed to the word without the dots ) I had a similar experience with the Sigma DP2.
The same setup: one lens - no way to get a "better lens" for it (not that there was a need for a better lens).
As quirky as it was, it made me think about the images. For example at the zoo, you'd usually wish for a long tele-zoom, to focus on the animals... Instead I started taking the visitors and their reactions to the animals into the picture and I think the pictures got more interesting as a result...

With too much gear we lose focus on the essential things all too easily.

Wonderful article- thanks for sharing.

I've had a case of G.A.S. for almost 50 years; owned 100's of cameras and lenses over that time. And I DO enjoy the "collecting" aspect of the hobby. But it can interfere with actually taking photographs for sure!

Lately I've found myself with four options: Canon 5D with several lenses, Fuji X-E2 with several lenses, Fuji X100S and Sony Rx100

Which to choose? What to grab? Which to use?

So all the Canon gear went- it's all gone now; all the lovely L glass, the 5D, the 7D and the 40D bodies- all of it.

WHICH LEAVES... the X-E2 system for when I have a very specific photograph in mind with a particular lens....

And then the X100S and the Rx100 to carry about every day. Ultimately one or the other of those ought to go I suppose, though I love both cameras.

Or may be I should just sell ALL OF IT and buy an RX1. LOL! Who knows?

At any rate- thanks for sharing your thoughts. Well said.

Steve

steve: if you love the x100(as i do) you will just be insane for the rx1. unless you only use the ovf and thats an integral part of the joy of the camera, the rx1 does everything a lot better. and the evf is stunning.

ive been using LR with my 6 yr old macbook for years. but over the last year for some reason im seeing more and more 'banding' or striations of concentric shadows in both clear sky and cloud highlights. its driving me to distraction, and is marring my rx1 experience. i think its either LR or my monitor degrading. i assume youve not noticed any LR problem? do you have 5? i dont think i upgraded this last time...

i loved it so much i went back and read it again
must... get... rid... of... gas.... as soon as i buy the black x100s, and the new em10, and mebbe the oly 25/1.8... THEN must get rid of gas! MUST!

Great article. It really made me think. I will return here in the future to learn plumber in birmingham more.

Hahaha, just kidding. It's just that those kinds of spam posts have been turning up in more and more places.

Love the article and the images. And yes, there's the paradoxical nature of an article about a camera that cured your GAS, only to give GAS to us!

I said to myself,

'Okay, he's talking about a small camera with a high quality lens and excellent output that he can use on a daily basis. I've got ... more of those than I care to enumerate. So which one would I use?

'Fuji X100? Love it, but a bit big sometimes.

'Ricoh GR? A wonderful camera, but there are times when I want a little more shallow depth of field.

'Olympus EM-5 with pancake lens? Great camera but similar problem.

'Ricoh GXR with one module? But then, I'd have to choose a module!'

And on it goes...

For those with RX1 GAS, have a look at the A7 with FE35mm lens. The pros and cons are obvious, but the versatility speaks for the A7 imo.

I'd bet money it's your monitor. Have you tried hooking your lappy into a high quality external display? I'm assuming you shoot raw as well.

Well, I took the plunge: RX1R with the EVF. If it is as good as you say, I'll be selling my X100S, my RX100 and my lowly Canon S100. The XE-2 (and assorted lenses) will continue to provide for wider angle, telephoto and other needs while the RX1R will become the daily carry camera.

Tuesday the big brown truck arrives!

yeah, as opposed to fuji or oly, sony jpeg engine noticeably inferior to RAW in any difficult light situation, including bright sunlight or general overcast sky w bright highlights...

Nice post, and I like the photos, especially the portraits and the shot of your son playing baseball. It's not every day you can shoot sports with a 35mm lens!

The portraits look very nice, good job with the lighting. My goal for 2014 is to do more portraiture and continue to explore on and off camera lighting so that part of the post was close to home :)

All praise the Brown Truck of Happiness! May it deliver all that you ask!
