Panasonic GM1 - Pier in Fog

The scene was gloomy as well as foggy, and the GM1 picked up some purple fringing that I left for another time. This was cropped from 4600 wide to 3900 wide and resized. f9.0, 1/400 handheld, ISO 200.

The people were about 150 yards distant (64 mm effective focal length) on a 400 yard length pier. The quality isn't great, but given the tiny camera and spontaneous handheld take in bad lighting, I thought it did pretty well.

I like the mood and lighting of this image. Thanks for sharing it.

I don't know if it is the quality of your post processing program, or what's going on with the shadow quality in this image though. Was it underexposed and you brought it up in post production? That's a lot of noise and artifacts for iso200.

Just a slight local sharpening with the old 50-20-0 trick. It was shot as JPEG, and the purple fringing was there at the beginning. I don't know if I have enough evidence to say this, and maybe I shouldn't even speculate until there's a firmware update (unless one is already there), but I don't think the image quality of the GM1 at present is comparable to the other Panasonic m4/3 cameras. The only one I had before this was the G1, but the Pana m4/3 series have improved a lot in the past 3 or 4 years I'm sure. But I wonder if the GM1 is strong enough to do as good of in-camera processing as its big brothers. Otherwise, just disregard if you shoot RAW.

Gloomy!! How are you liking your GM1?

I can't even begin to describe how much I like this GM1. To carry an interchangeable lens camera with that sensor size in one hand, and in the palm of that hand no less - and then be able to shoot it with one hand etc. etc. And you can wrap any protective material around it and put it into just about anywhere, although I wouldn't do a pants pocket because of the lens bulge. I'll be seeing some serious critique as time goes on - you know how easy it is to take these things for granted - but for right now the zoom lens and image quality are downright amazing for the size. I'm carrying it in a Leica 18727 case made for the LX7, and it's a snug fit for the LX7!! The LX7 is very good for its size, so the GM1 is mind-boggling by comparison.
