iPad Air for photography - is it finally time to buy?

Yes, it's that time again.... I am once again seriously thinking of buying an iPad.:026::daz: Most of you are used to my terrible lack of decision making skills and probably feel it's like listening to "the boy who cried wolf". Mea culpa!

Why do I want it - because I've gotten lazy and think it might be an easy way to pp my pix. That said, it seems as though it's a pretty pathetic excuse to buy one.

If anyone has the time and feels like sharing why they love using their iPad for photography and/or why they don't - please post your comments. Apple is having a "black friday" event and though the chances are it won't be a great offer...one never knows and thus one feels compelled to think, yet again, about taking the plunge. How big, wifi only or get that internet access too...etc.?

Everyone I know who has one loves 'em...but often for reading books.

I'm interested in the answer here, but to me, the tools aren't there yet. If you do any local brush adjustments, I guess you could use a stylus, but what editing package is good enough, and how do you do file management? Maybe I'm just stuck in my ways and workflows...Interested to hear what others say.

Right...I know they're "not there" but I never use brushes...don't own Photoshop, however I do have LR and the Nik software such as Color Efex, etc., that I used to enjoy using very much. Perhaps I need to bide my time until I can find a place in my new/old abode to set up my external hard drive, etc., and spend the time in my digital darkroom. Meanwhile, I use my iPhone and Snapseed and, personally, have been quite happy with my iPhone-o-graphy but the iPhone's screen is waaaaaaaay too small for my aging eyes...so I figured...maybe I'd finally rationalize my way into an iPad.

If you can use the iPhone, I see no reason in the world you couldn't do the same on the iPad! In that case, I'd say go for it. Your eyes will thank you! (and your neck, too -- less scrunching over)

Hi BB. I think you could save a few bucks and just go for a non retina mini. I don't know about you but that kind of resolution is wasted on my eyesight . I'm actually sure I could get by using my iPad and snapseed (if I had too) but only if I had to. I would definitely go for the cellular version. Even if you don't get I SIM card right away you have that option in the future. The cellular version also has a stand alone GPS receiver . Ok this might not be the big wow for everyone but I like the idea of an accurate location fix without being connected to wifi or cellular network. But that's my gps fetish talking. I use an eyefi card and upload straight to my iPad or phone quite often. I like the techno and it's nice to know its there if I need it.
Re the iPad mini. I have zero regrets about the purchase over the full size version. But I should have got the cellular ! No matter anyway because my phone tariff has unlimited internet and I can tether my phone .
Go for it BB. You know you want to :)

Here you go . Camera, eyefi card, ipad mini

Oh yeah. And snapseed.

BB, it seems to me from the photos you've posted here and from what I've seen on your Flickr, that you generally edit your photos and apply filters & all that on a global scale, so I would imagine that iPad or similar tablet would be great for that.

Also, you might be inclined to be more experimental while lazing on the couch, iPad in hand, than you would be while sitting at a computer.

Just a couple of thoughts...

P.S. I don't think finding an easier way to "pp" your "pix" is a "pathetic excuse" at all. ;)

Thanks "youze guys" as we usedta say in New Yawk! Garry, I'd been thinking about that plusses of the internet version - plus I can only pay month to month if I find I don't want it all the time. If you don't have it ya can't use it.;) (Really need a cigar smoking smiley for this!)

I was just sitting here redoing one iPhone photo from our foray today and thinking - "Gee, if only I could SEE what the heck I was doing!"

For sure I will get back into my other cameras...the XF1 did come out to play today, but I think you - Garry, Chris and Armando, all are persuading me that the Mini is the way to go. I can always go for the Mini retina...plus I am known for my MINI Cooper addiction...so it stands to reason.

I promise to let you know if I finally come to reason.:D

I'm debating whether to upgrade from the original iPad to the Mini Retina or the Nexus 7. Nexus 7 has an awesome screen as well. And much much cheaper. But I'm heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem.

If you're invested the theory is to stay the course.:D I have two very close friends who have an unreal hatred for all things Apple...the husband goes on diatribes...but I digress. For me, it doesn't make sense to go off the reservation. Armando, let's be frank and I think we can be - I don't think \ the $$ really comes into play for this... Just pretend it's for your wife! Like the XF1!

Oh BB……I have had a mini, and it's a great device, but have you held the iPad Air in your hands?

Phew…….hard to put down. It is almost mini-esque in size. (I NEVER thought I'd be saying smaller is better :))

BTW…..what's the temp there today? Heading that way on a Wed night red-eye.

A mini for editing photographs? Not in a million years. I have one, and a regular iPad 3, and seriously... you need the iPad Air. Its only grams heavier than the mini and you get a bit of extra screen real estate to do your thing. I like my Mini (though now of course I wish I had waited for the retina) but I wouldn't even try to edit on it. I have even removed all the photographic tools I had installed, because I could not see well enough what I was doing. Admittedly, my eyes aren't so good, but I just don't think 7.9" is enough to do anything useful.

:D Sounds like a helpful rationalization...but I need more reasons to help me.

Hey BB. I'm serious on the neck and eyes thing.

Recently, I suffered from a herniated cervical disk (in your neck). Makes your right hand numb, and shooting pain from your neck to elbow. Most of it is from bad posture, "chicken necking" and then some other things. Mainly pushing your head too far forward and down. One thing I'm convinced - hours of straining to look at a phone has taken it's toll (as well as some other bad habits). I try not to use my phone anymore except for calling, and emergency info gathering (GPS, store hours google look-up, etc.). The iPad lends itself much better to holding in front of me and up (and farther away) to keep my posture correct.

Just my two cents.

All of your comments - Rich, Sue and Bill are greatly appreciated. I know when I used to work on my MacBook at a kitchen "bar" and sit there for hours...that my carpal tunnel would become terrible due to the angle at which my elbows were - and my neck, too. All more points in favor of the iPad - mini or air. I did hold the air version and it was, indeed, quite lovely, Rich.

So do I go 32 - 64...? I'm assuming I can keep what I like and move them to LR...not sure if I'd have to do it via the MacBook and then on to the external hard drive where it lives in perpetuity:rolleyes:. (I do sound serious this time, don't I?)

Cold today - in the mid to high 20s. At this typing it is 19 degrees F.... It has been colder, but we're in for a warming trend thanks to your warm Hawaiian breezes, Rich. You can look forward to 40 on Thursday, December 5th!:D

I just think if you have the money, always get more storage. But then again, I have some videos loaded, so that might be eating up a lot of my space. I wouldn't go less than 32GB for sure, and 64GB gives your some future-proof.

Thin blood……lol

Definitely the Air. The 7 inch tablets are great for viewing photos, but I wouldn't want to do much editing. OTOH, if you are just doing global effects (sharpness, brightness, etc.) it could work just fine.
