My wife's XZ-1 will turn on but it just makes little whirring noises and the lens won't extend. Nothing of note appears on the LCD, although it brightens a little. Anyone think it's worth trying to get it fixed? Fortunately for her, I had thoughtfully purchased the XF-1 a month ago and thoroughly tested it before giving it to her tonight. :)

I think you need to contact Olympus. If I had to guess, there is something blocking the lens from zooming to it's starting point. Feel free to shower the camera and the company with compliments in any correspondence. Set a ceiling price in your mind of what you are willing to spend (You can find working used ones around the $150 mark so it should be well below that. And if you already have extra cameras, maybe it's even further below that. Good luck!

Also, you may be able to get something for it on eBay listed as "for parts" or "not working" and honestly describe the issue. I often see people paying absurd amounts of money for broken cameras.

What Luke said. It'll cost - at most - the price of postage to get a repair estimate from Olympus. You might as well find out if it's a minor problem with big symptoms. If it is a fairly expensive repair, it'll be easy to walk away.

My wife thought that the separate lenscap on the XZ-1 was too much to deal with on a camera. The lens on the XF-1 would probably be likened to a Rubik's cube.

I hope you can get your XZ-1 back to life without too much trouble.

I'm not bothering with mine. I haven't yet been able to bring myself to throw it away.

Well, after much discussion I discover than my wife really missed her old Pentax Optio-10, that little P&S with a tiny SLR hump with a flash in it. So, I found a used one online and she's thrilled. It goes to show how much of all this is personal preference. It does take nice shots, however:

Of course, I get the XF-1 back.

There was a LN black one for $125 and she's good with that. There was new white one from Japan for $678 but I didn't want to confuse her with choices  I also have a Pentax Q, and given the timing of the two camera releases I think they used the same sensor in the I-10. The IQ is surprisingly good in good light.
