I stopped for petrol today; I was thirsty.

Why is there not a single drinks container that actually fits in the cup holders of the average car? A little wiggle room I could understand, but no. Most of the bottles are tall and thin; they exhibit lemming-like behavior at the first corner, seeking shelter under the front seats. Some are square section. Some are too fat. All - without exception - do not fit.

Aaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhh...

I think they make cup holders based on the size of the sodas that morbidly obese Americans consume. You'll get our cup holders and you'll like it. The cupholders should come with various sized inserts to accomodate the various sized bottles, can and to-go cups that are available.

Here's a story about how a once proud car company that believed cars for driving....not consuming beverages within caved to consumer demand..... Germany's BMW surrenders to USA's cupholder fixation

Fair point. I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee once. It had four seats and six cup-holders. When I queried the logic of this with the salesman he looked at me as if I was an idiot and said "hot AND cold..."

My minivan (can I admit I drive a minivan?) has "claws" that you can squish down to fit around your drink.

I think Bill needs to re-evaluate the importance of his drink-holders when auto purchase. When I was younger (and much more handsome), I didn't need a drink holder...I wanted performance. Now, I just want a decent seat belt and a better stereo (although I love the way my parents minivan drives).

This all strikes me as similar to different camera manufacture trade-offs. There is no one perfect car (or camera)

Not so sure about the cup holders, but I twice purchased Ford Orion's because they had a recess at the top of the fascia which fitted my open snuff box. It was a deal clincher in those days when I couldn't face a long journey without my nose baccy! Any other snuff takers or reformed snuff takers in our number?

I have a little Suzuki Ignis. First car I ever had with cup holders. Didnt consider the design, really, cant put anything in there without tipping it, and if the takeaway coffee from the drivethru is too full, guess what. also, standard water bottles dont fit. I know exactly how you feel, Bill.

The front ones in the Mini are too close to the lower switches on the dashboard and therefore you can't put a small drink bottle or anything even slightly tall there...... the one in the back is okay but can't be reached!

My Subaru has great drink holders. Deep so nothing falls out. Adjustable. It even has intergrated bottle holders in the door pockets so my water bottle is in the shade instead of the sun all day. Genius.
And yes. Ill7 often drive with both a hot and cold drink.

You've gotten me started on cars. There was an ad for some sports car once that began "Market research has shown that most women decide which car to purchase based on the cup holders. Those guys have been hanging out with the wrong women." (cue vroom!)

My standards in cars have always been rather low. I once actually told a friend, of a car my late husband and I were going to purchase, "It's a perfectly good car. It just needs a new engine."

Another time, I said, "Well, it's got brakes and a driver's side window. I'm happy." That was the car that replaced my Corolla. When I walked into work one morning and announced, "My car was vandalized last night" (the driver's side window was smashed in) a co-worker asked me, without missing a beat, "How could you tell?"
