50mm compact?

I posted a thread earlier asking about the companionship or rivalry of the X100s and GR. As the GR bends to my will a little more, or is that visa versa ;) it's got me thinking a little more about compact kit. A nice compliment to 28mm to my thinking is probably 50mm (or thereabouts) - well this aint new news and the old ones who came before us spoke stories of the same. So I'm curious as to the modern serious compacts that fill that 'standard' niche.

So far all I can find in a fixed lens is the Sigma DP2M; and kudos to Sigma for going the fixed lens!!!

Or is there a camera I've overlooked?

Otherwise, when it comes to the clip-ons there seems to be:
- Ricoh GXR w/- 50mm macro lensor
- Fuji (XPro1 or XE1) w/- XF 35/1.4
- any mu43 with PL25/1.4

Hmmm, what would marry best with the GR?
(Not that my X100s is at risk, just curious )

There is no great compact 50mm kit, IMO. There are good ones, but not great ones. I'd like an X100 w/ a 50mm.

A hole in the market? If so, is there just not the demand? Maybe the world will catch up with Sigma thinking one day -well now have APS-C (and bigger) sensor fixed lens compacts - and produce a fixed lens line-up: wide/normal/short tele.
Kudos again to Sigma. Now if only the Foveon sensor could handle low light and the UI wasn't so clunky (loved my DP2s but found the process of extracting them sometimes a little painful).

The PL25/1.4 and XF35/1.4 are about the same size and pretty big compared to GR and x100s.

Compact Camera Meter

Not sure how big the 50 module is. If AF is not important one consideration is ZM35/2.8 + mirrorless (GXR-M, NEX, etc)

I pair my GR with GXR+ZM50 for people shots.

Those Sigmas are pretty amazing. The processing was too big a pain in the dupa for me so I had to let it go. But there were still some shots that haunt my dreams. Just effing ridiculous gobs of detail. Anyone who enjoys pixel peeping should own one..... at least once. I think 2 compacts with 2 frequently used focal lengths (aka, a bag of compacts) is where it's it. Changing lenses is sooooo last year. The GXR with 50mm lensor gave me nothing but great shots. Ricoh may surprise us and make a GR 50mm since they seem to have ditched the GXR. Imagine your joy if you could have 2 GRs....one a 28 and one a 50mm?

A Samsung NX200/210/300 with the 30mm f/2 pancake would be the most compact ~50mm ILC combination I could think of. Optically it's as least as good as the Panasonic Leica 25mm f/1.4 Micro 4/3 lens whilst being much smaller, but lacks the AF speed of that lens and there is no camera body that it can be mounted on that has IBIS.

I hear ya. I'd only go an ILC from necessity and to weld a lens up front.

A man can dream. And I would buy!
But this seems a departure from Ricoh's GR philosophy. Hmmmm...maybe they need to add a little GL (roman numeral for 50...not that I have any idea what the "G", nor the "R" for that matter, stands for?) thinking to their repertoire.

My vote would would go for the OMD with 25mm f1.4, beautiful results. But, not all that compact.
Had the PL25 and loved it. But the form factor is just not there. In addition to the net size, the lens blossoms with a hood so add a 2x factor and now we have an appreciation of its gross size

Well the more I dig the more I'm thinking there's a pretty big gap in the market here. There's the DP2 and that's it in fixed lens. The GXR 50mm doesn't get much glow and what's left starts getting pretty hefty - though Nic's Sammy is close form factor-wise. In mu43 you have to get back to the P20 to go micro, and now we are back to almost 35mm and the X100s. And so the carousel keeps a spinning...

I'd sell the Crown Jewels for a Fuji X100-like or Ricoh GR-like 50mm/f2....however, I'd sell the Crown Jewels, the RX1, the PL25 and get another credit card if need be for a CZ50mm/f2 RX2.

As it stands, the quite excellent PL25+OMD does the job...and then some.
