Nikon rethinks 1 System and cuts 2013 forecast citing poor sales: Digital Photography Review

Nikon says sales of the 1 series is off, and mirrorless market is shrinking, so they are rethinking the approach.

I have nothing at all against the 1 series, and know some very happy users. I think overall, there are still too many cameras makers (heck, even Casio is still around!). It'll be interesting to see if Nikon thinks to abandon mirrorless (is that what Canon is doing with the M?) or do a larger sensor, or go with fixed lens compacts (with larger sensors and better lenses). I wouldn't mind the latter at all!

I think smart money would be on ditching any smaller ILC for Nikon. Your DSLRs sell by the boatload and consumers if they are going to buy a quality compact are buying either a Nikon or Canon. Build 1 or two quality compacts and focus on shoring up the DSLR sales. And put a phone and an OS in your compact cameras.

Both Nikon and Canon developed poorly designed mirrorless cameras because they are trying to protect their strong DSLR sales.
Sony, Fujifilm, Samsung, Olympus and Panasonic created better designed and more well thought out cameras and systems.

I won't be selling my V1 system in any hurry. I admit to be happy I picked my V1 kit up new for $390. Things change, and if Nikon ditch the 1 series, I'll still have mine until it stops working or I decide for other reasons to move on. I've pretty much settled on my Fuji X-Pro and Nikon 1 systems now. I do suffer from gear lust from time to time though.

Nothing I've used beats the Nikon 1's autofocus, metering or colours for me.. Not even my X-Pro1 (Though it's metering is very good). I mainly use the V1 for family photos and such, but that's one of the things I think it's perfect for. It still beats my old D40x/D80 for IQ.

If only Nikon would come out next with something like the RX100 II sensor in a new model, and sell it for a price that's just not stupid, as they seem to do at the moment, then I'd like to bet their products would sell a lot more. Though given the success and IQ of even their entry level DSLR's they probably have less motivation, and less to lose than anyone except Canon in developing their mirrorless offerings.

Great stuff. I'll soon be able to buy a couple more V1's at rock bottom prices.
OH! There's a thought! Naturally, because I am the most indecisive person on the planet, I'm also now thinking I'll take one more shot at getting one locally. Going out later to cruise the not-usual-places I would buy a camera. Lets face it, even if Nikon never makes any new ones, these are pretty damned good, and I *can* actually see myself pottering about with a J1+10mm, and a V1+30-110 (and a bag full of other stuff... that 32mm still attracts me like crazy)

Exactly. I just gave the V1 a real workout, riding and photographing dual purpose motorcycles on the dirt roads and rocky trails of Vermont. The camera was a champ, helping me get some great action shots. I even shot some 60FPS bursts that I'm going to try to turn into 1080P HD video B-roll. No other camera - dSLRs included - offers the unique set of features of the 1 system.

It wasn't perfect - I wish that I could turn off auto review and that the buffer was bigger - but it was plenty good, and on the trail I found myself daydreaming about a second V1 or V2 to bring along.

I do hope that they don't abandon the 1 series completely as I think it would be a shame for a system that shows potential. Nevertheless, abandonement would mean lots of cheap V1 and V2 bodies and lenses! I do think that is unlikely though - especially since the release of the lovely looking 32mm f1.2 (which I can't afford, yet). :)

never really "got" on or "get on" with my V1

gathering dust these days

It is useful as a "back up" "in the same bag" to my Nikon D7100 as they have the same battery plus the FT-1 is OK on a tripod

maybe ashton will pull a jobs to keep the 1 series alive.

when i first saw him in the nikon commercials, i thought it was odd seeing as how he was in an earlier movie almost promoting canon.

I thought about the V1 at one point after prices dropped. But I waited too long. It seems the V1 is now relatively rare enough for prices to rise again. For example, Amazon has the V1 with 10-30mm zoom for $699. Oh well.
