Some non-enthusiast friends of mine say the LCD screen on their older (5+ years) Canon Elph has gone south. I'm going to see them tomorrow and they'll be looking for my input on repair options. I'm pretty sure I'm going to tell them to forget repair, pointing out that replacement will likely be less expensive - assuming the proper parts can still be found for their camera anyway. This older camera is a basic Elph with something like a 3x or 5x zoom. My friends are not likely to want to spend a lot of money (they ran a 1990s cell phone until perhaps last year). I see the Canon PowerShot Elph 330 with 10x zoom (24-240mm) is going for $199 these days. It's probably a safe recommendation for them. I'm not sure I can get them up to $299, but I'll try. But - with less than 24 hours notice, what kind of recommendations can the best and brightest at Serious Compacts give me? I haven't played in the very shallow end of the pond in some time.

are there any deals still around for the Nikon 1? Bring along your GX1 with the 14-45...... that should be just around $250 and the quality difference between that and a new Elph would be staggering. But we should assume they want a compact compact, right? I think the Oly XZ-1 should be around $199 ....maybe lower. Hard to beat that I would think. If more zoom is wanted, I think the little Panasonics are nice.....maybe a TZ20? That's my 2 cents.

The Olympus sounds like a good one, but I have to tell you that Canon makes some excellent point and shoots with very good sooc pix. I think they might do well to stick with Canon.

Good suggestions. Maybe a leftover J1 for $299. And I'll see what the GX1 is currently going for. The XZ1 is around $299 on Amazon right now. But I'll also check the various Panny TZs.

if used through Amazon is OK, the warehouse has one in white for $159 that I nearly bought 2 minutes ago. I have bought many cameras used through Amazon warehouse.....I think they are more often that not new ones that were test-driven by internet photo forum geeks  because every one I have ever gotten has looked like new. And I know white is not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm kind of in love with that wee Oly in white.

That's why I think the Canon PowerShot Elph 330 at $199 might be a "safe" choice for them. It's cheap, they're familiar with Canon and output, if not stellar, is probably reliable enough. But I'm going to try to take them up at least a notch.

S110 would be a safe choice or if he wait a little bit longer it could drop down to $299 very soon or even less just like with the S100 last year.

Stick with Canon. I had an SD700 many years ago and it was great for such purposes. I'm sure whatever they have now is probably pretty good.

Well, the PowerShot Elph 330 is on their radar, as is the latest Canon SX compact superzoom. But they're going to try to get the LCD on thier old camera fixed first. A shop in Pennsyslvania quoted them $65. Great, if that's what they want, I guess.
