Been doing some research and have come up wanting.

Just wondering on the 'best' accessory flash for the X100S. I say 'best', but that means 'best for me', i.e., a relative numpty with flash but a keen learner. I'm looking more for something I can use off camera for single flash fill-in and some general learning and lunacy.

I hear the Prince of Single Slave - Zack Arias - uses some Yong Nuos with his Fujis but he is a maestro and I am a.....ummm. Am I best to start with a TTL like the native Fuji EF-20 or EF-42 and graduate to things more manual or can I jump straight in with the much lauded and cheaper off-brands?

Appreciate any advice or links to such advice.

i had picked up a 560ex from yongnuo. it's cheap and usable. it reminds me of a canon speedlite. i don't bother with the (off-camera) TTL. so, all manual, here. works fine for me at the moment. i definitely like using it with my x100s over my x-e1.

Thanks so much Romi.

So weird I'd completely forgotten about having posted this thread, until about 8 hours ago when I started researching flashes again. Then, POP, arrives your reply. Excellent.(y)

YongNuo remains the front-runner for me from a price/value perspective, though I hear the features of the Series II and beyond make the few dollars more worth it.

Curiously:
i definitely like using it with my x100s over my x-e1.
Can I ask the difference between using the flash on the two Fujis?

well, i believe flash sync for the x-e1 is 1/125. it looks like i can shoot 1/250 all right. any faster and i'm catching the shutter curtain. for the x100s, i believe flash sync is at 1/250, but i'm able to shoot as fast as 1/1000 before it catches the leaf shutter. i'm still playing around with it.

as pricey as the ef-x20 is, i'll be picking one up as a convenience (pocketable) item. plus, it looks nice and streamline with the lines of the fujis.

Thanks again so much Romi for your help.

I see the EF-X20 gets a lot of love - which is weird considering it is relatively weak (same as EF-20) has no swivel or tilt (unlike the EF-20), and is the most expensive (more than the EF-42). Is it the build quality you are paying for?

Out of interest, if I go a Yong Nuo (or other third party brand) is any mount preferred? Canon, Nikon, etc?

not sure about the ef-x20. but i've always seen those boxy flashes even for old film rangefinders costing high prices.

as for the yongnuo, my particular model has modes for canon, nikon and everything else. do you plan to use it on- or off-camera? after seeing a few x-pro1 users whose hot shoe brackets have broken off due to a speedlight, i've been a wuss about mounting one on either off my fujis. plus, i just always have gone off-camera. i plan to get the yongnuo trancievers. i should be doing it that way anyway rather than using flash commander. it actually bugs me how my yongnuo is even triggered by just fill flash. (i wonder if my phone flash will work...)
