Who would spend the time engineering a high speed wide angle zoom and then stick a tiny 1/2.3 sensor behind it - Nikon.

What a waste!

I'm assuming this is the new P300 and the lens looks good at 1.8 to start but runs to 4.7 at the long end. The EX1 is 1.8 - 2.4 and the XZ1 even better. It is set at too low a price point to be 'serious'.

Sounds like something Panasonic would do. Soon we will all have 25Mp point and shoots that put out pictures that are grainy and are 15Mb in size. Technology marches on. I bought one of the relatively new Panasonic FZ-100 cameras and the output was really terrible I thought. Fast shooting, great zoom, light and way too many pixels crammed on a tiny little pinhead sensor. That was the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back for me. Got a SLT-A33 now.

I do wonder why so many people are obsessed with sensors these days, they have very little impact if you're a determined photographers. Sometimes, I wonder if people would buy a cuddly bear if it had a full-frame sensor in it... sigh...

Personally I don't care for nikon point and shoots. Their sensors and jpeg engine aren't up to cannon or panasonic imho. They really claim their lenses in their commercials but rreally cannon and panny lenses are sharper imo on point and shoots. Several years ago I sspent 200 bucks on a nikon that had horrible corner softness. Went back to get another and it had decentering issues. Finally we ended up with a canon a560. Sharp lens and decent sensor at the time.

What a difference a year makes !

Well here we are just over a year later and Nikon apparently listened to me

Seriously, and that's what this site is all about, the P330 now has apparently the same sensor as the P7700 and a truely useful 24-120 (35mm equiv) zoom (that Oly should have done for the XZ-2). Also 10fps burst and a 921K screen and GPS function.

Having handled a P7700 and a P310 recently, their build quality is excellent and the fact the P330 will be RAW capable and a reasonable price should see it as a direct challenge to the Canon S110.

However I must admit after playing with a P7700 it has me lining up some gear for sale ...

Whether they were listening to you or someone else, Nikon does seem to be considerably upping their compact game, both with the 1/1.7" sensor cameras as well as with the Coolpix A. Good stuff!
