Hello everyone, I just posted a new article on my blog on making big prints with fixed-lenses compact cameras, featuring the Merrills in the highlights!

You can read it HERE, let me know what your thoughts are!

To be really (and politely) honest. The last thing I would do on a forum like this....is to join and then immediately post an article where; at the end, you ask for a 1 off or monthly donation to keep your blog going. I think it is rather rude. I stand to be corrected of course.

Best wishes

He is simply trying to get traffic to his blog and thought the audience here would be interested. What is wrong with that? The Camera Store does that and I am glad that Chris does what he does. You don't have to donate nor buy products from The Camera Store.

I have a bigger issue that it is perpetuating the myth that pixel resolution limits print size--my comment over at LuLa. I imagine this will hit a number of other fora.

why not just take out the request for money? Of course I am interested, but I am directed to his site by his posting here in the forum. That is great...but I don't appreciate the request for a donation at the end of the blog. Maybe I am being sensitive?

And this is not his first post neither; Vieri already posted some great reviews and beautiful photographs.
Let's not get carried away - as Hikari said already - nothing forces us to donate.

Then I bow out gracefully but with my view intact. However, I am not one to create disharmony (as can be seen from all my posts here and affiliated sites) At 58 maybe I am being old fashioned rather than sensitive.

If you thought it was his very first post, I can understand the sentiment.

But you can check his recent Nikon P7700 review and you'll see he replied to all the questions and thanked everybody for the interest in his writings. If he has plans on building a web presence similar to Steve Huff or Ken R, why not? His reviews are practical and well written and having subscribers will only force him to get even more serious. It was his beautiful depiction of Venice that made me check his website and I'm not sad for it.

Personally, I'm glad to see new faces here, providing fresh "blood" and content, like Entropic with his LX7 review did also.

I suspect that I share Pete's general view.
Never liked Rockwell or Huff..they say things to generate web traffic and then move on .. but I did enjoy the OPs use of a Sigma Camera in Venice and he takes some cracking shots.

I think you are being sensitive--I did not notice. Besides, what is wrong with the request? You don't have to donate.

Hey guys,

let me just say a couple of words, so we can hopefully all move on from this and talk about the merit of the article (if there is any). I am a photographer first, and run my blog because I enjoy doing it and because I think that it might be interesting for people to read about my experience with gear as a working photographer; no charts, no brick walls, no controlled tests, just how gear perform in the field, if it is up to my expectations or not and why, such things - things that I don't find often (if at all, for certain cameras and pieces of equipment) on the net.

That said, there are two things. First, my time is limited like anyone's to 24 h per day: I would love to dedicate more time to do camera reviews and sharing on the blog, but since I do it on my own dime, without any sponsorship from camera companies or anything like that, to write more I'd need to cut something else that makes me money; as well, buying cameras and gear to review costs money, which I earn with my work. Hence, the need to ask people that enjoy my writing for help to be able to write more - completely voluntary, no diglloyd or reid reviews subscribers-only policies here. As pictogramax said, that would only stimulate me and force me morally to do more and better! Second, with all due respect, I know that the internet is full of free information, and as you can see I am providing my articles for free as well; however, people is not surprised to have to pay for their coffee or newspaper, so I don't understand all the fuss when someone provides you with content (for free) and asks for voluntary donations in order to provide you with even better content. Once again, voluntarily. So, if you want to help, great; you don't, great, you'll be able to keep reading for free all the articles you want, just skip the last paragraph and all is going to be well - sounds like a win-win situation to me, not something that I would complain :D

About resolution, I don't think it sounded like I am trying to perpetuate any myth, if so I am sorry - I don't mean that, I am just stating facts such as: to print at X" by X" at 240 dpi, you need XXX Mp. Which is a fact. You can get to that number natively, with a camera that output XXX megapixels, or you can get there interpolating in Photoshop or other software, or you can leave it to the printer software; whatever you choose, if you want to print X" by X" at 240 dpi, you need XXX Mp. Of course you can choose to print at lower dpi, but that is not what my requirements are to print Fine Art images... as always, your needing may vary, and so your solutions. I simply found it great that technology is getting to a point where we can print natively at 240 dpi basically nearly up to such large prints as 24x30" from compact cameras - try that 10 or even 5 years ago...! :D good times!

Thank you everyone for your answers and comments, I really enjoyed the discussion!

Best,

Vieri
