Hello everybody, I just registered for this forum and I happy to be here among fellow compact-camera shooter! :D

As a first post, I want to share that I recently posted an article ON MY BLOG comparing the Sony Nex-7 equipped with Sigma 19mm & 30mm lenses with the Sigma DP1 & DP2 Merrill, featuring beautiful Venice images.

A teaser: Sigma DP2 Merrill:

Very nice comparison. I loved the DP2S and LOVED the colors and sharp details while I had it. I ended up selling mine because of the lack of AF speed, the ISO noise at 400 and above, and the fact I found the RAW files only looked their best when I processed the files in the Sigma software and I prefer Photoshop ACR and Lightroom for my workflow.

In any case, I'm glad to see Sigma raising the bar with the latest DP series cameras.

Vieri, a very warm welcome. I have followed your blog for a while with great interest and fascination. Thank you so much for your contributions and valuable experience. Having sold an Nex 5N and recently replaced it with a DP2M I appreciate the differences in these cameras which you articulate so well.

For me the Sigma camera has a more dramatic and almost operatic appeal to the emotions.

Hello Vieri and welcome. Beautiful images. What I particularly like is the the lovely silvery blue tones that you have retained in these shots. To many landscape/cityscape photographers have fallen for the 'golden hour' line and turn the orange saturation up to 11 in shots like these (my rant on the subject is here). Yours in contrast are restrained and beautiful.

Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed! I didn't use the DP series before the Merrills so I can't compare; however, I think that Sigma got two very nice little cameras here, IQ is fantastic at low ISO and with the new SPP Monochrome option is very very good in B&W up to ISO 1600 and even 3200 is usable, which is not too shabby indeed.

Thank you very much for following my ramblings on the blog! :D Operatic - that's very good, as a classical musician by trade I really appreciate the comparison and definitely can see it - I wish I thought about it when writing about them ;)

Just yesterday I stumbled on your post on DPR and here you are today :) Good to see you here and warm welcome! I enjoyed your comparison and photographs on your blog.

Thank you very much, I just found out about the forum here and i think it's a very good thing to have, a forum dedicated just to compact camera. I hope to be able to add my contribution to the discussions often1

Welcome. Nice writeup on your blog. Will be interesting to hear what u think of the new dp3m.

Cheers
Gary

Hello Gary, thank you! I will receive the DP3 at the end of March, and will write about it as soon as I'll have put it through its paces. I am looking forward to it actually, I think it will be a very welcome addition to the merrill line-up.

I saw this in DPR also, lovely photos. DP series are perfect for these type of photography.

Hello Serhan, definitely - the DP Merrills are a great lightweight kit with superb IQ, if focal lengths and speed are OK for one's needing I think there aren't much better alternatives around - including big DSLR!

Thank you very much, I am really glad you appreciated the hues and tones, and that you found that they worked well to express the mood I was after. I think there is a place for oranges/reds and there is a place for subtle and subdued hues: as you say, too many people falls for the ones forgetting the others... Thanks again!
