Sony RX-1 Review, from LL

Mikey likes it :). I always enjoy his reviews. About the DP2M comparison, I know exactly what he means about townspeople and pitchforks too.

Yes, the townspeople thing is well expressed.

I like his reviews too; real world, and based on his needs and experience. I don't always agree, but that's usually because I have different needs, or not as much cash. But I think his reviews focus on what matters - actual use, and actual output.

Played with a RX1 at the local Sony store today. Very nice construction. I kept wanting to bring the camera to my eye though, because the camera just begs for a VF. It'd have been nice if Sony had included the add-on EVF with the camera itself as part of the hefty price tag. The AF speed was nothing to brag about -- more or less similar to the NEX7. DOF control (as seen through the LCD) was pretty good, and it was easy to get a somewhat shallow DOF at F2, even though it's a 35mm lens. I think if this camera was priced a little bit closer to the X100, say $1500-1600, I could see the RX1 selling like hotcakes.

Just wait a year.....there will be plenty of used ones for around $1600. That's when I jump in.

I would consider it at $1500-$1600 + $250 for for the optical viewfinder. Smart move with the ISO 50 because of this:

"As is common for lens shutters, where the shutter has a shorter distance to travel at small apertures, 1/4000th shutter speed is only available with apertures small apertures (smaller than F5.6 in this case). 1/3200th becomes the fastest shutter speed up to F4, with 1/2000th the fastest shutter speed available when the lens is opened up beyond this point."

It looks kind of ungainly with the viewfinder attached. See:

All that said, the FF sensor part is really appealng. Just not $3300 (with viewfinder) appealing. :)

I wish somebody would make MFT camera like this with the Panasonic 20 as the lens and an optical viewfinder.

Nice idea. The Sony seems good, but unless you print it strikes me as overkill. The VFs kill it's looks.

I think even then unless you print larger than say 12 x 18 you are going to have a hard telling the difference between this camera and the X100 or the OMD with a good lens on it. I print that large with the X100 and I can't tell the difference between that and the Nikon D700 with the 35mm F1.4G unless you are looking at DOF. It looks like a really nice camera and it has a very good lens on it. It does look kind of unbalanced/strange to me with the viewfinder on it. I guess I'm old fashioned but I wouldn't buy a camera without a viewfinder.

I would bet that it sells really well though.

I told my dad about the RX1 - full frame, nice integrated lens, and they managed to make it smaller than his E-M5 and PL25 by a good margin. He was very surprised by how little they are charging for it. I don't share that perspective but found it to be an interesting one.

Remind him of what he said a few weeks before your birthday, just shortly after you've lovingly polished his shoes!:D
